I am doing a project at college where I have to promote a design museum. I want to be a bit different and not just use posters to advertise it. The idea is to attract all sort sof people. Even those who are not in to art or design. One idea I had was to do some sort of weekly treasure hunt thing which gives the winner a really exciting prize. The hunt will involve maybe having to go to the museum to look around and gather notes then at the end you will get a list of things ( haven't quite worked out what yet ) which means they will have to go around the city and take some photos of certain things using what they saw in the museum as clues. Then once they have taken the photos they have to either hand them in to the museum or send them off for them to be checked and see if what they took photos of is correct. The idea is a bit iffy at the moment but was thinking of something along these lines. Any opinions? Or better ideas than this? Thanks :) |

I love your idea, sort of a design scavenger hunt, with wide appeal! The KEY is going to be two-fold: how to get the word out to the general public to get participants, AND what that prize is going to be.
Ideas for prizes: a popular, rather high-dollar item that has great design. Maybe an iPod, a Blackberry, the latest universal remote (Harmony 880?), a unique sculpture or painting from a renowned local artist...
How to advertise? Maybe the design museum has a list of supporters, and either a direct mail piece that goes out already OR an email that it sends out about new exhibits, etc. You could drum up lots of excitement about the treasure hunt among people who already support the museum, AND make sure they know the "hunt" is for their friends and family too.
Creating a press release and sending it to the radio stations and tv stations would likely be worthwhile. Perhaps you could ask your favorite radio station to broadcast live from the museum for the event! Or if you have a local neighborhood newspaper, you could call a reporter or submit your own article about the treasure hunt.
One more train of thought here... My office had a team-building exercise for about 20 people, which involved a scavenger hunt in downtown Dallas. We had a blast, and got to know each other much better than the normal office environment allows. We had to take digital photos of each item to prove we had seen or done it, or found it!, and at the end we all gathered in a restaurant so our judge could view our digital photos (still in our cameras) and tally the results. There were SO many questions and puzzles, and a time limit of 3 hours, so there was no way any team could complete all the challenges - - the team with the most points won the prize (which was a day off from work!). You could certainly do this as an individual treasure hunt, make sure the prize is something that people will get very excited about!

Not sure what would be in the design museum - but aiming it at kids might be good - kids parties, or have things in it that they can interact with / play with. Aim it at schools as well - secondary school age. Adults are unlikely to want to leave the museum and go off around the city with their camera but kids would.
What about using something that has been designed and asking for suggestions on what it can be called, or what people think it can be used for - nearest answer wins a prize. Can start the marketing campaign with pictures of it from different angles with a question mark - and then build up to the description of the competition and the location of the museum.
Maybe not suitable but you could suggest a bus around the town with music blaring and adverts being handed out - create some interest / make it look fun. Or some type of light show on the side of the building. |

I would suggest implementing a plan that will drive consumer awareness using the media. The treasure hunt is a great idea as an event, but without the promotions to solicit customers how will the design museum attract the crowds they are looking for. I would start with the newspaper and find out who the local arts writer is. Then find key influencers from other media outlets. Then talk with them about the plan once the dates for the treasure hunt is in place. I think once a week is too much. Rather I would suggest a monthly treasure hunt only during the summer, just to make it special. |

I would target children within schools and colleges,a s if they do not attend through these then there is a posibility they would through family time. Podcast it, stick it on You tube. Use the museum as the prize to competition for schools, . Offer workshops, schemes of work to raise profile, supporting various areas of british curriculum - DT etc. Go and visit them too with the workshops. Hope this helps. X |
