Marketing is essential- it is basically the communication between buyer and seller including the activity of sales. Without sales, you would have nothing. Advertising is the most commonly thought of form of marketing and can be wasteful but is, again, necessary. Many new products are developed and people do not realize that the want/need it until they see it/hear about it. If you asked a farmer 100 years ago what would make his job easier, he would reply that he wanted a horse that works longer and eats less. He would not say "I want a tractor". They did not exist and were not even an idea for people who's lives it has completely changed. Who would have thought of the iPod? Did you know you wanted one before it existed? If they didn't see a need in the market, provide a product, advertise it and sell it, we wouldn't have many of the things (like computers to use Yahoo Answers) that we see as essential to everyday life. Besides, without the marketing on Yahoo, how else would any of us know about Answers and even be having this conversation. |

...I don't think is a waste, because the ads the "tell" you how great the product is (sometimes it is not true), and by the ads they make the product known. Also if they use a popular figure, this will bring more attention. However if the product is really good, it will sell for itself because ppl will recomend it to other ppl and so... |

If its a new product then I can see marketing. But alot of times it seems to be an improvement on the old product that I have found lacking.I hate changes to things that already work. If I need something I know where to go to get it.So in general I just want to see marketing on new things not things I already know about. |

marketing encourages excess buying (increasing waste)
a companies first responsibility is to the shareholders so they must advertise; consumers need to know about a product to buy it (the money put into ads should, and normally do, increase revenue)
people will buy just about anything if is marketed right (if they need it or not) |

businesses market products that people already know about because it raises brand awareness and preference. If they havent heard anything about a product for some time, the consumer will be more likely to forget about it or choose a different product, whether they realize they are doing so or not. Theres a reason that most ads arent about new products and businesses pay so much for them. |

No. There are only a few products (mostly necessities) that are able to sell themselves, for the majority of products, marketing is used to generate desire for goods we don't actually need. So from a business perspective it isn't a waste at all. |
