Marketing is not a waste.

Imagine you are running a trading business. And everyone around you is selling something that customers are fed up of. You want to know what the customers would like to have as alternative. right ? or would you sell the same thing that others are already selling? This is called market research in Marketing terminology.

Once you have the right prodcut. You have to inform your customers what a wonderful prodcut you have, right ? Otherwise they would not know it. This is the communications part.

Now imagine what you sell is a seasonal prodcut and if it not sold fully within a particular period this would be dead stock in your godown and you would not get money to buy your next stock plus you incur charges for maintaining stock. SO you would want to push the whole stock before the seasons ends, right ? We use so many methods for this and the most simple way is to give more than others are giving.. So you give some promo items free or reduce prices etc. ( This is Promotion part)

Now imagine your prodcut is electronic item used in business, customers would immediate service support for that you want a service team right that is polite and resolves issues at lowest turnaround time right ? That is Customer support.

Now imagine you have a brand like Black and Decker or philips. And a similar prodcut like yours made in China costs just two dollars while yours costs dollar four. Even though both of you buy from the same same manufacturer. You earn two dollars more for a piece and still sell better than the other guy. IS that not great ? ( that is why we do branding)

let me first declare that marketing is just not selling and advertising.

first tell me hw can u develop a product or discover uses of soem produc with out having market data. it is marketing that captures needs and shows the way hw benifits could be offered in teh form of products or service.

when u go to some banks the process seems pretty simpel and easy. dont u think that process improvement is marketers task.

in some airlines u find most courteaius ppl and u feel happy. this is also amrketers task.

these are just few examples. u need to think marketing beyond communication. it is just not important for an organition, it is must for success of every organization

Marketing is not a waste! Its just on how and what way it was done.

If it was a waste, then i could not have been in this business myself. Im earning a lot, and the companies we're helping are getting their results.

Its human nature to apply what they are informed by the way.

No, it is not because.... I answered this already.

I think that if you think about the products and services that you purchase, you'd be hard pressed to honestly say that you haven't been influenced by marketing - either in the form of a television, radio, or print advertisement that made you aware of the product to begin with (and perhaps a reason to purchase), an article you read about a product or service in a magazine (which was likely the result of PR dollars), informative and eye-catching packaging, an event where you got to try a product that was handed to you for free, etc.

Good companies measure the results of marketing dollars to determine whether that spending results in increased sales. If it didn't work, you wouldn't see so much of it :)

Marketing is not a waste. It's true that it uses revenues to try and generate revenue, however, it is a proved business strategy that has been used since the Roman era.
