Sales is only one aspect of marketing, so I don't agree with the statement. Marketing does not, by necessity, result in sales. Government, for example, markets messages to change behavior that does not involve sales at all (i.e. anti-drug). Advocacy groups conduct marketing campaigns that do not result in sales (i.e. save the rainforest). In those cases, the message is intended to motivate people to take action.
Marketing is an umbrella term that encompasses advertising, sales, product branding and placement, market research, consumer behavior, etc. |

Marketing manages the market offering, sales closes the deal. Marketing looks (classically) at product, price, place, and promotion. Sales is an iterative approach of meeting the customer concept with the company's offering. Marketing is a predictive approach. Sales is an interactive approach. One is supposed to assist the other (marketing to generate leads, sales to generate feedback).
As part of the promotion, marketing will put an image on a product, yes.

Marketing is much more than just a sales image. I am a marketing coordinator for a university. I handle a great deal of duties - materials such as forms, brochures, and other handouts; reports to pull from our database for mailings, demographic and feasibility studies to see what areas to mail to or which groups of people are most interested in which degrees and why; Website maintenance; scheduling information meetings with different corporations and chambers of commerce; support for the program advisors so that they can do their best for each potential student up to enrollment (and then student services takes over in support); research to see which tools are most effective at any given time, scheduling airtime and ads for papers, magazines and other publications; and much more - but I would need a lot more room to go through all I do in my position, and I am only one of a 10-person team, all with various duties which meld together to create the marketing team. So as you can see, the promotion and marketing of an image is more than a simple sales pitch. |

I disagree. Marketing is the essence of putting people in the mood to buy. Marketing is about the person and their emotions, not about the product. Marketing creates interest, curiosity, and emotions. Marketing is the preparatory before the sale. Good marketing makes the activity of sales easier. The individual exposed to good marketing is going to the point of sale ready to take action to purchase goods or services. And marketing must be targeted to the audience you want to take action. Does that help?

I don't think this is a matter of opinion. It is simply a fact. People will not buy something simply because you tell them that it can do certain things. They want to be able to see it. In order to see it you have to portray some sort of image in the form of commercials or detailed brochures which should contain illustrations. All these things would fall under advertising or marketing. These are crucial in selling your product to achieve maximum and consistent profit. |
