What are some possible advantages and disadvantages of marketing "real life" products in a virtual world such as Second Life?
Additional Details
Second Life is an online virtual world where you can create an avatar and and do "real life" things in a virtual world. Kind of like The Sims, only here you can actually interact with other users and actual companies pay to market their products in this world. You can use real money to buy fake money in Second Life to purchase things like Nikes, cars, houses, etc. For example, Nike actually pays real money to have a Nike store in Second Life where users can come to shop and spend their fake money on the virtual Nike products. I guess I'm not having as hard of a time with the advantages as the disadvantages. What would some disadvantages be to companies marketing in this virtual world?

Advantages:
- Product Exposure
- Increased sales
- Differing demographic (target audiences)
- Reaction based creativity
- Customer Satisfaction range/idea.
- Increased software sales
- Instant gratification (able to see and use once purchased)
- No chance of ware (unlike the physical)
Disadvantages:
- You're not dealing directly with a company you're dealing with a user.
- Product fraud
- Billing complications
- Clone advertising (Dishonest dealings done under the same banner)
- Demand slumps (you are only active during the times you're online)
Just a few off the top of my head.
There are sites out there with more information and precise information. Business Analysists normally publish findings when it comes to product movement, it wouldn't surprise me if there are some bloggers from SL UO WoW etc that have done the same.

The advertising is not real, so less costs. Example: online billboard vs real life billboard.
You can customize your advertisement to the person you are interacting with. example: certain advertisements appear to kids logged-on vs adults.
You can instantly change the advertisement to be current to the minute. |

One advantage my be, if your target audience is youth.
The disadvantage is your target audience is limited by the popularity or not of some program beyond your control. (Second Life)
