Been in your shoes. I was extremely shy and could not speak a word infront of my parents but I managed to overcome this and I am now the mktg Manager of a multinational FMCG company.
If you want to be in the field, you MUST this little problem. I can't deny the importance of being self assured and presenting to an audience on a regular basis.
I was able to overcome my problem by taking a presentations skills course early in my career. It was a tremendous experience and it really helped shape my career and boost my self confidence.
Presentation skills courses deal with the phsycological and content related attributes. Both compliment each other and go hand in hand.
Practicing is also important, school/ university nowadays enhance that aspect by pushing students into making oral presentations. Do not hate them, the more you practice, the easier it becomes. Try to master the material being presented so that you are ready for any questions. |

If you're interested in marketing I'm sure you can find ways around your problem as well. You could try online marketing and perhaps you'd be better suited for that since you're shy. Why not give it a try and see if you enjoy it and if you do maybe you can take it to the next level and really worry about being more comfortable speaking in front of people. |

I think you might be thinking "Publicist" instead of marketing. Marketing you don't have to involve in a lot of public speaking, although it certain helps. Marketing people at my company work on cross-functional projects at their computer and sometimes have to talk to other people from different departmets, but all internally. If you're not in PR you wouldn't have to worry so much about public speaking. So definitely, I'd say go for it. Marketing involves more than just public speaking - like business background, project management, strategic planning, creative ideas, etc. And all these things you can do while you're sleeping! :) |

Even though public speaking and presentations are a must in marketing it is not the only thing that you'll be doing. Must marketers work in groups and their presentations are in group as well, so you won't be alone while presenting a project. Plus after a while of giving presentations you get more comfortable with it, and your problem will disappear. Anyways. if you really like marketing you shouldn't let your fear get in the way.

i was the same, my boss made me do a dale Carnegie course. It is expensive, and I hated every minute of it. But from a perspective of 12-15 years later it was worth it. If it is too expensive for now, just get his books, starting with "how to win friends and influence people". and practice some of his theories. |

once a person has clearly identified his weakness correctly it is the easiest to correct. There are courses now available for presentation techniques and public speaking. Avail them and overcome the weakness and convert that into your strength.

Look, shy people, which I am one, are the best people to be in marketing. When you get to know a shy person they have a wealth of knowledge and experience behind them. Shy people generally warm up to you slowly but when they do warm up they will talk , I know. Besides you do not have to deal with the public all the time in Marketing, there are many avenues in marketing you may take to steer clear of the public. Have you looked into Marketing accounting? |
