medolfan1313 | My wife makes the absolute best cake you've ever tasted. How can I mass market it? |
Once people taste it, they can't get enough of it. We have lots of people in the local community who buy them, but we'd like to expand and actually turn it into a business. Where do we start? Additional Details We're calling it Koa Kake because she created it while we were in Hawaii, Koa wood is native to Hawaii, there is no "C" in the Hawaiian alphabet, and we got out female dog in Hawaii and named her Koa! |

You two may not be ready to open a bakery but the following sources will get you pointed in the right direction.
The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* How to Open a Financially Successful Bakery by Sharon Fullen, Douglas R. Brown
* The Baker's Trade: A Recipe for Creating the Successful Small Bakery by Zachary Y. Schat
* Baking for Profit: Starting a Small Bakery by George Bathie
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures! |

Few things you need to know before going mass:
1) How many cakes can she make in a day?
2) How do you plan to deliver them? or do u plan not to deliver?
This will help you decide if you want to advertise to the entire town or just the local neighberhood.
Once done that you need to do some financial planning and work out a budget than can be used for promotion. Depending on your budget you can advertise in local media (press, tv, radio, web) or go for outdoor publicity like posters, flyers etc.
One of the cheapest ways to get publicity is to start talking to the local press and have them write about you. You can have a cake tasting party and call all important press people.
Hope this helps you. |

Agree, you can hire one or two assistants, then set up a small caffee or shop.
Or, make some samples, take photos, attend social gathering and talk about your cakes LOL (you can do it to your neighbors as well)
Further, you can also print flyer or advertise in local newspaper
I know some people do so here, especially for wedding / birthday cake. |

Some good answers above, esp the Trademark lady.
You didn't say if you want a retail shop or not... but that topic's been covered.
If you don't want to open a shop, your options are basically mail order/web/catalog, or selling via "dealers" such as bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants etc, either local or national / global.
Each of those is a full topic in itself - you might post separat Q's for those.
Also, someone brought up production - how many can you make before you outgrow the kitchen? Can you outsource it? At what cost / quality / speed / control tradeoff?
Your local area or state probably has an association of mom n pop food companies like the jelly lady, the bbq sauce dudes, etc who sell at craft fairs and have limited, mail order distribution. I know there's one called "Taste of Texas" you could Google. |
