Have you tried networking with your local chamber of commerce? If not, here are some tips:
1.Be an Active Member.
2.Make Sure You’re In The Organization’s Directory
3.Read Your Organization’s Newsletter
4.Welcome New Members And Introduce Them To Your Business
5.Attend Functions And Offer To Help
6.Sponsor An Event Or Give A Seminar
7.Market To The Membership
8.Use Membership Discounts or Co-op Advertising and Buying
9.Link to Other Members Websites
10.Adopt A Possibility Mentality
Hope this helps... you can use all or some of the ideas above to help with your networking. The biggest hurdle for networking is just "doing it". It doesn't take a lot of brainwork but it does require talking to people. |

rmhoover1 has some excellent advice.
You can also become actively involved in other community organizations. There are plenty of organizations out there that attract a wide variety of people.
Also, your choice of where to become involved might be influenced by what it is you are selling. For example, if you're selling medical office supplies, you might want to get involved in a hospital boosters organization (making sure first that it has plenty of doctors and their spouses involved) or find an appropriate way to become involved in the local medical assistants association (like if they do an annual fundraising event for charity it would be good to help with that both with time and money).
Of course, always have your business cards with you no matter where you go. Get your contact information out to everyone who might be a potential customer.
And, remember, networking is NOT ALL ABOUT YOU. If you don't really like other people, and you're just doing what you're doing for your own sake, they can tell. |

I run a networking group in the UK so thought I'd share some tips etc with you :)
Firstly, you already have experience so not all will apply to you...so here goes anyway.
Always make it clear from the start when you are talking to others what you do. Its a business event not a few drinks down the pub...
If the network event organisers are organised you will have a delegates list given to you-check the list at the beginning of the event and mark the people you could do with having a chat to.
Always be confident. Confidence attracts others to you, and before you know it you will have loads of people chatting to you about what you do etc etc etc.
Ask the event organisers if you can do a presentation (if your business allows for this).
Ask them if you can possibly "sponser" their next networking event-if this is again suitable for your line of business.
Different networking events cater for different business types/people so remember whatever worked at BNI may not always work at other events.
And lastly, always smile and act like you are the best in your field. I don't mean ignorance, I mean kinda happy, kinda confident. There's nothing worse than going to a networking event and finding miserable people in suits who don't want to talk to others around them. |
