Purfume is something that makes a woman feel special. It's a way for us to treat ourselves to something indulgent. Or it is given as a gift to us from someone we love. I think if you can find some way to make it magical, sparkling, special that would be cool. Maybe with lots of sparkly holographics. Think outside the box. |

First off people don't buy the package they buy the product.
Packaging hosts everything from manufacture to the shelf impact packaging jumps off the shelf into the basket, but! fragrances are well studied individually to mix with the body of the user. I package, I design and I sell. If I were given your challenge I would write down all the positives of the product. all of them and somewhere within that list I would find the direction to take.
Example: Say this fragrance is international in development how about an old world bottle and a box of olde world maps? |

I think that a perfume box - if it was women's perfume - would be nice in a star shape or a heart or something like that or if it was christmas the star could be a limited edition along with a christmas tree - it could have the name and a slogan with words like heavenly scent etc. Or a mens purfume / body fragrance could be in the shape of a hand like a karate chop or you could do these ddesigns on a square shaped box.

I would think of a small wood wine box. It would show class and elegance as well as be an associative type of marketing. Relating the perfume to a fine wine.
SIA Professional Services does these really cool wine boxes that have full color graphics actually in the wood. The prices are good for what they are and they custom design everything. I know someone who did small thin wine boxes for hand crafted fishing lures. I doubt anyone ever even threw that box out and as a graphic designer I am sure you like the idea of your creation staying around long after the perfume itself is gone.

well firstly companies use boxes because its most cost effective.
You could try creating a spherical/cone/pyramid package to take away from the "box" image. heart shapes may be a bit impractical - may prove difficult to stand.
try tin packaging (eg like JPG)
try plastic/perspex (might be costly)
eyectaching colours
swirly designs
glitter/ sparkles
or you could cut the "packaging" and make the bottle the package in some sense so focus you design on the creating an eyecatch attractive bottle which instead of being placed in a box will have a clear seal. (like one of those porferated seals) |

Design is not a artists fancy but a solution to a problem. Form follows function. So you will have to define the functional requirements first. Then you will concentrate on marketing requirements of branding (market segment you are catering to, gender, class of consumer etc. Maid servant and Lady of the house cannot use the same perfume and so on) Define the problem and you would have got half the solution, other half being implementation. |
