Where can I promote website for free? Everywhere I try to promote it, it costs or I have to sign for some sort of mailing list

Have you tried link swapping with other sites?

Otherwise advertising DOES tend to cost a little bit.

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. Also don't forget to promote your website in other media (print and broadcast) as that will help attract new people who may not already be on the internet looking for your problem. For free promotions, you can send out press releases, give away free samples, provide your service or product for free to a radio personality in exchange for their positive review and comments on the air.

And about the having to sign up for mailing lists is because you are trying to list your website ads with FFA sites, and 98% of them are no good to get real visitors to your website, it just fills up your email box with all the members con ads! avoid them as much as possible!!!

There are many, many free submission search engines to submit your ads too! But some are good and some are not so good! Try as many as you can and see which ones pan out and the ones that don't! It's quite easy once you get the hang of it! Never get frustrated, promoting can be quite fun as you learn the better and proven ways to do it!

Don't bother adding your site to search engines. If your site has got great content then people will want to visit it and other site owners will want to link to your site.

Website promotion is really that easy! Well, almost! :-)

Get involved with communities that have to do with your website:

-comment on blogs - don't spam - just put in your website when it asks for it
-post on forums - establish a presence - answer questions that relate to what you are doing and put a link to your site at the end
-submit your site to stumbleupon
-start a facebook/myspace group/profile for your site - get your friends involved
-write a story that pertains to what your site is about and try to get it on digg
-make a video that relates to what you do and put it on youtube

Other than submitting it to the search engines word of mouth is still the best free bet.
