You have such a wonderful and easy challenge, because so many movies and tv shows show us GEEKS (napoleon dynamite and the hit tv show Office are examples)
Geeks are funny, so make sure your geek promo's are just that funny.
How do you promote, well, that is easy too.
one of three options depending two questions
1. Do you have money
2. Do you in a big city
Options:
1. If you have a lot of money--easy answer--use the TV commercials
2. If you have little money, but live in a big city--use the Internet. Make online ads and find ways to sharpen your online skills.
3. No money, and no big city--then the best way to advertise is ads in the newspaper. |

I did marketing for some years. My best suggestion to you is to OBVIOUSLY promote. What you could do is centralize your main clientele demographic, then decide how you want to do it. For instance if you are looking to hit more college students/ graduate you may consider hosting a club or a bar, then passing out flyers that give free service after three calls. I would not reccomend throwing free money out there just yet because you are still starting off. Otherwise, for more professional clients I would suggest simple appointments especially with companies who do not already have their own IT department.

Well, I never deal with a company online that does not display a mailing address. "Real" companies, including Internet ones, should have an address, even if it is a post office address.
At some of your hourly rates, have some estimate of a completed job, for example, "website setup is $15 per hour, $150 for a complete, functional site with popular user selected features".

make an add in you local paper. all sorts of people will look for sevices and jobs in the paper. you could also call the phone book company and put in a campain. |

I don't know what your site does but one option is to print the address on business cards and then go bar hopping on a Friday night in areas where your target audience tend to hang out and hand them out.
All you need is to get a few people in each group somewhat interested and they will introduce their friends. This of course assumes that there's something they can gain from your service. If not, you'll get tons of quick looks but no return traffic, referrals or sales. |
