The title tags are what appears in your search engine listing. Having a great descriptive title that tells a user what the site is all about encourages click throughs and tells the search engines what the site is all about through keywords
For example here's the tags of Forbes Magazine

Title tags alone though is not enough to give you top rankings in the search engines. As Google's software engineer Matt Cutts said http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-advice-writing-useful-articles-that-readers-will-love/
