Main basic thing is you should work on various factors of SEO ( search engine optimization) to get your site rank & traffic well in the search engines.

Mastering Craigslist gave me at least 7,000 hits within a week, just post ads across the popular cities, two to three cities everyday, my next blog will be revealing how I optimized craiglist.
Ebay's forum gave me 500 hits with 1 single post, just blend your link with a topic, bump it once or twice until everyone in the community goes to the link, then you can start posting that in another section that's related.
Digg gave me around 100 hits with 1 single post, which is kind of surprising because I've never even know that site until recently.

Strong presence in natural search can drive a lot of traffic to your site, free traffic - well, realtively free if you exclude resourcing for optimising.

And its not all about link building, though strong in links are positive. If your site's relevance and content is poor and if the sites linking to you are poor then it could do more harm than good.

SEO and attracting traffic are 2 separate issues. A good SEO doesn't always mean that your website will generate more traffic.
For attracting traffic to your website you need followings
1) Good Content - Content must be original, authentic and interesting and which can keep visitors hooked up to your website.
2) Attractive advertisements - We can't undermine the importance of attractive advertisements whether they are text advertisements or animation a good and attractive advertisement always pulls traffic to your website.
3) Social Networking - You can't ignore the power of social networking. Social networking websites are very powerful now a days and eve I can say that just by promoting your website on these websites you can generate more traffic than you do in traditional ways.
4) E-mail marketing - Though pretty tough given the fact that any unsolicited e-mails might be considered spam you have to be careful to do e-mail marketing. The best way is to attract visitors by asking them to subscribe for newsletters and then promote your website via newsletters.

Honestly the best way to drive traffic to your website and create/sustain a stable interest is by creating discussion.
Having your website out there, being mentioned in lots of places is key to keeping it current and important. The more people mention it, the more it will show up and the more traffic you will get...
Look into Google Page Ranking...very helpful with gaining traffic also you should read some of the articles on this site because the owners of this blog own a company, Yovia, devoted to SMO.
