Screaming TV Commercials?
What is the psychological basis of the screaming commercial? I assume that the Oxyclean type of TV ad must have been well thought out by agency advertisng psychologists to deserve the ongoing ads.

If there are any published papers in the psychological or psychiatric literature on the effects of and the responses to screaming, I would appreciate the journal reference.

I realize that screaming does get one's initial attention, but why would one continue to listen to the blatant rudeness and what is the sales rational?

IT'S LIKE AN E-MAIL ALL IN CAPS - BOLD - UNDERLINED which is considered rude and immediately prompts the delete button....without reading the message! It gets a moment of negative attention prior to the deletion

I've worked in and among ad agencies for many years, and none of them used psychologists. Keep in mind that many TV commercials (and other forms of advertising) are not done by ad agencies. Instead, the advertisers (e.g. auto dealerships) make up the entire commercial and then get someone to shoot it for them. And many of these advertisers simply don't know what they are doing.

Of course, some "screaming commercials" are created by ad agencies. That just proves that not all agencies are competent.

I understand your frustration, though. Our local TV stations frequently air car commercials that start with a very shrill woman shouting at the viewers. I immediately hit the mute button on my remote control because her voice has such a negative impact on me. I've even considered calling the dealership to express my opinion...but I probably won't go that far.

It seems that so far we all agree on one thing, none of us go out to buy the product that's being screamed about! There is a radio commercial where I live for a local car dealership that grates on everyone's nerves (including the DJ's!) and it actually made it to TV. I stay as far away from that place as possible. It is obviously the attention grabbing aspect but maybe they need to do a consumer poll about the commercial after it airs to see how well the buying public receives it. Maybe some changes would be made. Also, do they really think people are going to go to AIG insurance after watching those moronic ads that treat us like idiots? I think not!

The best screaming or high energy commercials were from crazy Eddie. He started in Yonkers and made it big with his screaming sales of stereo equipment. But then again, that was the 80's when everything was big.
To answer, I think the oxy guy remembers Eddie. He just doesn't know Eddie went bankrupt and became a bad drunk or so I heard.

I don't know the answer to your question but I will tell you that I have never bought anything that Billy Mayes yells and screams about. I see the product in the store and I hear his voice and I just keep walking by.

As per usual, American advertisers think or seem to that LOUDER IS BETTER! Perssonally, I make it a rabid point NOT to purchase ANY item that is screamed at me from my TV screen.

very simple...the more aggrivating, the more you remember the ad.

personally, if they have to yell, it shows they are trying to get a point across to the consumer that has usually ended up as false advertisement.

I completely agree with you. In fact, I feel almost the same way about all commercials. That's why I bought a Tevo system. Sorry, I don't know what it stands for but it makes TV viewing much more pleasant. Before I had Tevo I would mute the commercials, but now I can fast forward right past them. Finally, commercial free TV!

I absolutely do not see any reason whatsoever why these
companies have to have these screaming commercials, they must think everyone is deaf. I turn the commercial off and do not do business with them.

I absolutely HATE that, and it only serves to turn me off the product.

There are a LOT of moronic TV commercials out there. The screaming-type of commercial MIGHT appeal to the same type of individuals who are riveted to those TV shows where people scream and fight with each other.
I find it very easy to change the channel for that kind of garbage!
