I am developing a sales strategy for a line of LED products. They could be used BY Walmart as signage with a programmable message, or they could be SOLD BY WALMART in hardware, automotive, sporting goods, or garden departments.
Does anyone have experience dealing with WALMART?
Assuming there are specific buyers for each department, how do I get their attention?

Sounds like a product that already exist. Hard to sell something that is already out there.
But, your local Wal-Mart will get you the phone # for the regional purchaser. I know local growers that sell their produce at the local Wal-Mart's and do quite well, they just had to contact the regional buyer and set it up! |

I have several friends in the retail biz who sell to Wal-Mart (companies like Kodak, etc.). Before you get excited and gung-ho about pitching to Wal-Mart, be VERy, VERY prepared to massively lower your sales price because Wal-Mart is notorious for low-balling. They do it for a few reasons, but primarily because they KNOW retailers, manufacturers, distributors, etc. are SO eager to have their products in Wal-Mart.
Proceed with mild caution and make sure to alter your business plan / forecast accordingly. Be prepared to potentially increase your units moved / sold, but decrease the unit price.

I have no experience dealing with WALMART. I did see a Candian news story about a company trying to become one of their vendors/suppliers.
You need to deal directly with their home office.

They are a HUGE company & usually wouldn't deal with a smaller size company when they could outsource a similar product in China for a fraction of the price. Its all about margin & making the most profit possible.
There also is a link from their home page on becoming a supplier by submitting a proposal guide.

It may be difficult to get walmarts attention, they are HUGE and the buyers dont have time unless you are producing massive volumes of product at miniscule prices. I personally know someone who deals with walmart, they turn over 100s of millinons and have a showroom in China. Maybe get the attention of a manufacturer/wholesaler who sells to walmart already, thats much easier |
