Should I employ a company to promote my business?
I have a good business idea and believe that it would work. What I lack is the skills to promote the business. I need help in branding, promotion, websites etc etc.

I know how the business could be promoted but dont have the first clue in doing so.

I have seen adverts for companies who specialise in this area - should i consider using their services and will it cost a lot of money?

If you're in the UK, talk to your local Business Link first. They offer a lot of free help and advice on all the things you mention. They run free seminars that take you through each topic.

If your business relies on you to carry out the 'doing' part of it, then you may need to bring in help in doing some of the other things.

There are many ways to bring in outside help and not all of them need to cost a fortune. For example, if you know who your target market is, you might ask a Virtual Assistant service to find names and addresses of people in that market and put them into a database for you. You write your mailer, based on what you've learned from Business Link about direct mail, do a mail merge and send off your letters.

Before you outsource to anyone, try to understand as much as you can about how to promote your business. Even if you don't have the time and resources to do it yourself, you'll be better informed for shopping around for others to do it for you.

Beware that some companies that advertise the services you mention use lists that haven't been screened for Telephone Preference Service or Mail Preference Service. Some use data that's not current so you can end up spending on data that's worthless.

Good luck!

If you have confidence in your idea isn't the answer obvious, and yes it will be expensive. Try contacting your local Government or Enterprise Agency, they might help.

Getting specialised advertising help will cost you alot - because these companies are specialising to help you out day by day.

You said you lack skills but have you tried these ways.

using classifieds like http://www.sellit-right.com

word of mouth

ad in shop windows

google adwords

affiliate marketing

setting up a blog to talk about your biz

forum joining and article writing

My company offers these services to small businesses and works with a network of vendors that provide discounts. Our marketing services are not for everyone but for the basic run of the mill type stuff, it is not too expensive depending on what you want and need.

We offer everything from just creating a marketing plan and teaching you how to do it, which can run anywhere from 500-1000 depending on the nature of what you are selling and the level of detail you would require.

The benefit of using a service like ours is that you get to work with experienced professionals and leverage our vendor relationships for things that you will need.

You can hire someone to do it, but more than likely you will end up paying more going that route.

Again it really all depends

What does you company do?
What will it manufacture?
Is it a service based company, and if so how much do you charge?
Where does your profit come from?
How many people will work within your business idea?
What area is your company going to specialise in?

Without knowing some of answers to these, and a whole lot of other questions, it is quite difficult to assess how much of an input other peoples expertise would have.
I wish you all the best in your endevours, and hope it all works out for you.
All the best
Peter.

ps. Are you based in the UK, or abroad?

NO.... I would hire on person who possesses these marketing skills and website publishing experience. Pay that person. For example, I am AWESOME at marketing and have website experience, not to mention I like this kind of work. I would do something like that for 12 bucks an hour. You probably will end up paying a company a lot more!

A few ideas...
Do you have your company as a decal on your car for advertising? Or even a clean looking bumper sticker on your window?

At the end of all emails, do you have a signature with your company's name to promote it?

Have you left business cards at various places for people to see (i.e. cafes, gym locker rooms, stores, malls, etc.)?

Do you network online to promote your company?
