undomiel99 | Should I get a domain name yet? |
I am setting up a new business but it won't be ready for another year. Someone suggested that I go ahead and get a domain name, so that way I will have the name I want. Does this sound good? Even though I won't have a website for another year or so. I don't mind paying to keep it...I was just wondering what you suggest. Thanks! |

Yes! I would go ahead and get your first domain name as soon as possible and start developing the website now. By doing it now you can pre-sell your potential customers and have them waiting in line when you open your doors.
There is a lot to consider when buying a domain name, you must understand the importance of domain names when it comes to branding and search engine optimization.
You should do some research, if you haven't already, before picking a domain name. But don't worry to much, you can always buy additional names for website, this is a very common practice. |

Absolutely go ahead and get your domain name and webhositing service is dirt cheap right now too. Then start to work on your site with a parked home page with the business name fully displayed. |

Domain names are fairly cheap to register, and you've already stated that you don't mind paying to keep it. In fact, Yahoo! offers domain name registration for $9.95 a year. It's worth reserving your domain if you've already decided on one. Although, if you haven't yet decided on a name / domain, save yourself $10 until you're ready. |

Definitely get it now. If it's a common word or a clever name, it's probably already taken, and if it's not yet taken, it might be by the time you get around to building your site.
It's super cheap to register a domain name with GoDaddy or Dotster or any of the many many domain registrars. |

Lets look at it from another angle... fast forward a year from now, when your business is ready to go. You go to register your domain name (which probably has something to do with your business, right?) and its taken! Then you have a problem!! If it is available, you should grab it while you can... you said you don't mind paying for it, so whats the big deal?
Here's another tidbit: consider a domain name that is easy to remember, catchy, and uses the .com extension. Lots of people are having to go to .biz or .net, but thats usually because their .com choice was already taken. But lets face it, the extension .com is the most readily used (and therefore remembered) and you should strive to get a .com too!
If it were me, I would get the domain name now if its available and sit tight working on building your business. If you haven't already, consider the free resources provided by the Small Business Administration or SCORE as they are federally funded programs to help new business owners get all their 'ducks in a row' and provide counseling to start ups. I have used them and highly recommend them!
Good luck :) |

If you have a business model already, it's not a bad idea. Your domain name should hinge on factors like what you are selling and who you are selling them to. If you come up with the right name now, just buy it. Domains are pretty cheap, so if you have an idea of what you want, it's not a bad idea to snap it up before you risk losing it.
