I work for a small company & I do all their advertising & marketing layouts internally so they don’t have to pay for an outside advertising agency. We use internet & e-mail marketing extensively & I am the only one that knows how to layout HTML/Java & interactive image layouts. This saves our company thousands of dollars a month.
Now my boss wants me to teach her how to do this step by step, but I am really hesitant to share my knowledge. I feel once she knows how to do it, I may not be as valuable to her. And with the economy being on shaky ground, I can use all the job security I can get.
How should I deal with the situation? Should I give up my trade secret? |

Since you are an employee of this company, your "secret" is legally theirs. They have been paying you to do this, and develop it. If you haven't ever signed a exclusivity agreement with your employer,and they can you after you teach them how to do it, you could start your own business doing the same thing for other businesses.
If this is something you truly invented, and it not known by anyone else in the world, and you consider it unique, you might want to consult a patent or trademark attorney to see if you can put a patent on it and sell it commercially. They can also advise you if your employer has rights to all the work and ideas that come up when you are working for them by taking a look at your employement contract.
If you are using commercial software and you are the only one in the office who understands it, just teach the others. You have no legal right. But you do have a good negotiating point for pay increases. Showing how talented you are makes you a more valuable asset to the company. |

It's Not Trade Secret is once know just HTML Layout or Java-script etc. It's Open...widely open.
My personal advise: Teach them almost all things you know. Obviously, your skill is YOURS, your Ideas are yours...NO BODY CAN STEAL FOR YOU.
Your boss will be highly obliged to you if you help her from your heart. You may get promotion with more advanced jobs.

Assuming the boss isn't paying you "thousands of dollars a month" she probably isn't looking to replace you - but a good manager/owner needs to know how each department functions.
What if you were sick or quit? Where would the company be? I'm sure just giving the boss training on the program won't mean she will have your kind of expertise - which only comes from repetition. But it will make her feel more secure.
Anyway, how would you go about turning down her request? It would make you seem uncooperative which could damage your relationship with her. |
