Should I take the new job even though it is very similar to my old job?
I am extremely bored at my current job so I have been looking for somthing different. I was planning on somewhat of a differnet direction in my career, try something new, but a recruiter contacted me and sent me on a job interview where I would be doing something very similar to what I was doing. It is a great company with chance for advancement (which my current company does not have) The drive would be much longer than what I am doing now and it may be very similar to what I am doing, but the company is much more exciting. I have been offered the job. What would you do? Take it or keep looking? If I don't take it I could miss out on a great opportunity, if I do, I may miss out on something better. HELP!

i am actually in an almost exact situation, i took the new job. it's the same money, a little farther away but there is room for advancement, my current job has nothing, this is my last week and my boss doesn't even seem to care and is in no hurry to find someone for me to train, so i know i made the right decision
weigh the pros and cons, think about the long run, not just now, which one will be most beneficial to you? which one will give you the most satisfaction? etc

just make sure financially it is not going backwards

Why not design the job you really want? stop playing it safe and break into what really brings joy! don't settle.

Lee_386
Yes, you should! you don't have to think about boredom, all you have to do is to enjoy the job because you might get promoted.
Like you said, the company is more exciting. Besides, it wouldn't be difficult for you to adjust coz it's similar to your old job!
Take the chance! Only few people are given opportunities like that!

If the company is bigger & better, more opportunity for advancement, and you have nothing to lose, go for it. They likely at the very least, do things differently which may be a nice change and they probably also have better benefits as well. I am now in a position where I literally 'can't ' do bigger & better because I'm a single Mom, daycare issues, all of my travel (to & from work along with the allowed amount of time a child can be at daycare), etc, I wish I would've taken the plunge when I wanted to and headed out to VEGAS a few years ago, then I could've at least said I did it. I say go for it.

I wouldnt do so.You will still be broed at this job.Think about it.

If anything was going to happen at your old job, you'd have known it or atleast sensed. Take the new job. Or better yet, request a week off vacation and use that vacation week to test out the new job.

Only salary matters. Your priority should be making lateral moves every 6 months to a year for a 10% raise each time (ignoring benefits, which are all worthless).

When I say only salary matters, I mean ONLY SALARY MATTERS. Boredom vs interesting work is not an appropriate criteria for choosing a job. If you fool yourself on this issue you will end up failing in your career and being screwed by someone who knows better. Work is about one thing..... M O N E Y.

Your end goal is to collect enough screw you money to work outside the system and have control over life without having to be beholden to anyone.

For me, that was investing. I make a nice 6 figure salary in investing after I got my screw you money. Nobody but nobody tells me what to do about anything.....if you catch my drift. Think about that the next time you are being tortured endlessly in a meeting by someone you have 30 IQ points on. Your priorities need a rework.

Gwen
If it were me I would probably take the new job. You can take advantage of the chance to advance to get into something new and exciting. I would take the sure thing rather than waiting around hoping to get something else.

I'd go with whatever pays more.
