Television and print media seem to carry an increasing number of ads for prescription medicine. Is it right for pharmaceutical companies to target general audiences with pitches for their products that can only be obtained with a doctor's prescription. Are doctors being pressured by patients to prescribe unnecessary medication because their patients see those ads and demand it? This seems like a poor practice that increases health care costs and puts patients at risk for drug related complicatons. |

It's not really right for them to do what they do with their bogus ads (all of which carry small print "disclosures" about trifling complications like nausea, vomiting, and sudden death. Oops!)
Any working doc will tell you he hears about what he should write for the patient from the patient. If they claim that doesn't happen they're pathologists and their patients are dead, so they shouldn't be polled on this topic.
Yes it jacks up costs and definitely a lot of these meds are bogus with bad side effects. Frequently there are better alternatives to what they're pushing.
But you'll be hard-pressed to do anything about it--you can advertise pretty much anything you want and too many folks refuse to believe that advertising isn't "for real." Some stupid notion about "they can't say that if it's not true." Ha! If only I could group these folks together with their money in hand the number of times I could sell them ocean front property in KS would make me richer than Bill Gates. |

I think everything you said is pretty much on target except I have also felt it odd that they aren't really talking about any drug that actually cures something but just helps with symptoms.
I would also guess, and that's all it is, they are also each drug company's best-selling and highest profit margin drug.
Television really no longer caters to children. In fact I bet televisions now ranks third behind the Internet and cell phone use among children. Looking at these ads they are targeting a more older demographic not younger. |

What citizens fail to fully realize is that the health care industry...big Pharma is in the business of keeping people sick.
If people are healthy...they don't make a dime.
...I mean literally....they make ZERO money.
People really think these companies are here to "help us" and ease our suffering.
They are causing the suffering in reality....and they know it. |

No!! They cannot talk about the drugs being pushed on people on the streets, when they are useing tv to push their drugs on people. To me just because they make the drugs should not give them previlges and free from the law.
What's the differance in a drug dealer getting on tv after he is finished making his meth and advertiseing. All has the same priciples, don't it?
Not only that they use there legal system to get away with what they do and say they have the right to advertise, du!
I see the same things,television is the ruin of what is happening to our children and even some adults.
This thing that is called intertainment is being used to destroy our way of reasoning and take us away from the main source of the life giver himself.
I don't think I have to say much more, so this is how it is since we are living in the hand of the God of this world ( satan ).
You know he offered Jesus the world if only he would do an act of worship to him.
But Jesus said there is only one true God the father and you should worship only him!.

Yes! I do feel many drs are being told by their patients what medical conditions they think they have and what medication they want.
I don't want to see Pharmaceutical advertisements on tv. Just the other day I was watching family movie on TV and with my sister inlaw (9yrs old) and they had commercials of erectile disfuntion and male enhancement pills!! As you could imagine I was asked questions I didn't feel was my place to answer!
Pharmaceutical companies are all about getting their money.... and they don't care about anything else.... the side effects of their product, who they push to sell/buy their product and they don't even bother to subject their product throught proper testing to make sure the product is safe (esp. long term). The Pharmaceutical companies run a good portion of the stock market and the goverment with their greed! |

I agree that it definitely has a downside ... and does cause patients to ask doctors for these drugs. If it didn't, big pharma would not be spending millions running these ads. Some drugs are "choices" like Viagra, but I do think others that treat illnesses like depression, incontinence, and other things need some thought. In some ways it has been good, because all the ads have made it more acceptable to not only ask for medication for some problems, but have made it easier for people to talk about. And, as with depression, just talking about it and sharing one's feelings, story, and being open and even laughing at one's own disease can be very healthy and the step toward recovery. |
