No, this is rubbish! No one can guarentee a number 1 search engine placement.

Obviously it varies on which field your website covers, but if its in a popular field with hundreds of thousands of results, it will be extremely difficult to get to number 1.

The most important factor for a number 1 result is the number of links to you. These must be from sites related to your site, rather than a link from anywhere.

The age of the domain is also a factor, the older the domain name the more its trusted by the search engines.

SEO is another factor, ie your title tags, meta tags and keywords on your page.

The size of your site is also relevant, the larger the website the better its going to rank in the search engine results.

If your friend says he can get you to number 1 for a little searched phrase, then yes he probably could. To get you to number 1 for a popular search, its very unlikely.

Also different search engines use different systems for ranking, so you optimise for the biggest ie google. Just because your number 1 in google doesn't mean you`ll be number one in the other search engines.

It can be done, but I'm 99.999% certain he's talking rubbish. Each search engine has its own algorithyms for determining page rank. You can "optimize" a website to get the best possible ranking, but you can't guarantee a top ranking in all search engines unless you are talking about for a gibberish phrase like "bedalthimu fooshlindorf."

Real rankings come from relevant links to your site, quality content, and frequent updates. It also really helps to have valid code.

Any thing is possible, but for a person to say, 'ALL' search engines is a Bold statement.
I would think twice before handing over my hard earned money.

Getting to number one is easy if it's for an unusual search phrase.

For example search Google for 'fossilized Knoxville ostrich burger' and you will see that there are only 640 pages for this term. Getting a page to number one for such an improbable phrase would be very easy and take 10 minutes.

However getting to number one for 'poker' which has over 116 million pages would be extremely difficult. In fact the street price for optimizing a site into the top 5 for 'Poker' is $5 million dollars.

Your site is going to be somewhere in between :)

It all depends on the search term you are optimizing for....

Dont know about your friend, but some claim this - reputable ones don't as there is no such magic (otherwise we would all be doing wouldnt we?). The real downside is some sites do this with some techie magic that basically irritates the search engines (as it tries to mislead them) and throws them out - so it could have the exact opposite effect! Recently BMW in Germany got into trouble by using such "instant magic results" and google got very upset with them and pulled them from their search engine for a while - as small business/person google would have no sympathy and would just ignore your site for good. Not a good risk imho!

Ask him the url of his website and see where that is. He's talking rubbish, you can improve your ranking more than likely but anyone who guarantees a number one ranking with a search term defined by you is not real.

Google Torrecomputing and I am number 1 but google torrevieja computer and I'm some what lower at 15 and I'm pleased with that.

bigpuppax
For the right price you can do anything (like buy Google and put yourself wherever you want) but anybody who tells you that they can get you to #1 without drastically qualifying their meaning is talking nonsense.

One reason his claim is overstated - number one for what search term? You can't just optimize a site to show up "on top," you need to optimize it to show up on top when someone does a specific search or searches.

Also, optimization is not a one-shot process. It requires constant work, otherwise you will soon be knocked off that top spot by other trying to get there.

mjammy1978
its not that hes talking rubbish

it can be done but its more about word (website) optimization, you need to add unique or popular words to get to the first few pages or search engine info.

keywords will bring you higher up the chain

Many sites/people claim this. The problem: you have to pay upfront. If he think is so easy, just offer him to pay him once he accomplishes the task. Maybe you can establish levels of pay. Let's say he gets you at number 1, you give him 100% of the agreed amount. Number 2, 80%. Within top 10, 50%. Anyhting lower, nothing. If he is so convinced of his "powers" he shoul'd not be afraid of the challenge. If he shows some doubt when you offer him this agreement, that means he was talking rubbsih to start with.

It can be done but it doesn't have to cost anything. I, myself managed to get my company websites on the front page of Google, Yahoo, Ask and AOL.

There are numerous guides on how to achieve this (try http://google.about.com/od/searchengineoptimization/qt/improverank.htm for a good one) so basically it will all come down to if you have the time to do so.

Since 85% of Internet users rely on search engines to find goods and services, it is essential that every business promote their business via a published domain named website on major search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com & MSN.com. These major search engines are the Yellow Pages for all business which can be reached by anyone having an Internet connection.

Begin by publishing your website's domain name for FREE at Google's search directory, visit "http://google.com/addurl/?continue=/add... and fill-in the form. In another way, Google, Yahoo or MSN provide a Yellow Pages kind of advertisement for every website according to a set of ranking protocols. And there's where web designers and search engine optimizers play an critical role in marketing websites which in turn, display goods and services to be discovered [via search directories] by the rest of the world. The greater the appearance or presence that one's website can generate on search directories, the greater number of customers will accordingly visitor one's website.

As for the cost to market one's website via the Internet and more particularly -- search directories, will depend initially with the proper design of webpages and the proper placement of metatags which are: <Title>, <Description> and <Keywords>.

A searchable <Title> would be "[name of the goods/services - a generic domain name is okay unless you own a well-know brand], [city], [state - postal abbreviation]" -- up to 65 characters and spaces. The <Description> would be up to 20 words comprising a complete readable sentence which promotes interest in your business, i.e., "We sell quality _____ at a reasonable price, etc." And <keywords> would consist of 12-15 compound plural words separated by commas, i.e., "cars, planes, transportation, etc."

In conclusion, webpages can either be rather straightforward using only HTML text or be crafted totally as a graphic Flash configuration. Either way, care should be taken to complete the Properties entries for Title, Description and Keywords so that there is something that search robots can index. The more one is educated in crafting effective webpages along with metatag placement, the less will be spent to hire third-party consultants to assist you in this matter.

To demonstrate how search engines/directories work, go to Yahoo.com and type in the following search query: "pizza downtown los angeles." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query which means you want to order a "pizza" from "downtown" and in what city -- "Los Angeles." Sounds fairly simple and then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.3 million search results and among the top Five rankings will be a business called "Pizza Next Door, etc." The significance of this demonstration is to illustrate that most Interest shoppers will discover "Pizza Next Door," forthright because of its high web presence and ranking within the Top Five. So these shoppers are more or less likely to patronize this pizza establishment and hopefully in the long term; validate the owner and his family as having a profitable Internet enterprise.

To further illustrate how one can achieve a TOP 10 page ranking on Google.com, type in the following search query: "ecommerce tutorials seo." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

Good luck!

It is certainly possible. I have top ten rankings on several sites I've done. HOWEVER, I've done it using a local market approach combined with some other tactics.

For example, let's say you sell widgets. Well, widgets is going to bring back a lot of hits...but if you set your keywords to Widgets + your city...then you have a really good shot for attracting those people that want to buy widgets locally. You improve this by having "widgets" in your domain name, your site's description and in the first paragraph of your site's text.

These 4 all contribute to higher rankings.

If he's promising you top ten on a national scale...than I'd ask for proof. That can't be guaranteed. I learned that the hard way... a $650 lesson to be exact. That's when I decided to teach myself.
