Try to organize a block sale. Alot more people will come if they think it will be worth their time to see what alot of people have vs just you. List that in your newspaper description. Take up a collection from those in your area who wish to participate to help cover the cost of your newspaper ad.
Buy some bright color stock paper and print up signs on your computer. Say "BLOCK SALE" or YARD SALE in large letters, with the address location below that in smaller letters. Don't try to write directions, you won't have enough room. Then go back and print large ARROW pointing signs. You can turn the arrows the way you want when you post them on poles etc. That gives direction to the potential shopper.
Think about the major roads near you. I've went as far as 10 blocks away and posted signs.
Don't forget to get some colored balloons, they don't have to be filled with helium, just partially blow them up and affix them near your major street direction signs. They will really catch attention. Don't completely blow them up, because a fully inflated balloon bursts easier. But don't leave them saggy either.
I also like to bring my grill out to the front yard. I cook hot dogs, hamburgers and chilli during my yard sales. Ohh I don't give em away. I sell those to. Last time made more money on the food than on the stuff. The neighbors love my dogs n burgers!
I should mention, I live on a cul de sac (dead end street) we generally close off the street to cars. The last time I organized one of these our street looked like a carnival attraction. Probably an average of 100 people on the street all thru the morning and into some of the afternoon before it slowed down. I did about $4000.00 during the sale.

All the tips I've read so far are great ideas. The most important thing to remember is never ever ever do a garage sale alone. Always have at least one other person there with you. There are scammers who will take things when you're not looking and worse, criminals know that garage sales are all-cash events. If you're alone, you're an easy target to get robbed.
Check with your city on whether signs advertising your garage sale are permitted on streets away from your home. In some cities, they're prohibited and you'll be fined. How? They note the address on the sign and then send you a citation in the mail (or show up). Fines can be several hundred dollars, thereby taking away all the money you just earned at the sale. Most city Web sites will have information on garage sales.
I also place colored round stickers with the price on each item (larger ones have tags). These can be found at any Target or office supply store and are cheap. It helps you keep track of what you're charging each item, and is really good if there are multiple sellers at the sale.
Each seller is assigned a color, and when an item is purchased, you take off the sticker and place it on a sheet of paper under their name. It makes it easier to know who is getting what amount of money in the end. |

people don't want to have to ask how much every item is. Instead of individually pricing every item, you could have certain tables; ie. a $0.50 table a $5.00 table etc. Have stuff organized; a kitchen area, etc. Don't expect to make millions; if some one is interested in an item and they offer you less, you should probably take it. if you're willing to get rid of it ... you mine as well do it at any price. |

Try to put an ad together with pictures of some of the big items and the original price....list name brands and prices ranges....use vivid colors and large letters...
