I recently started a website and tried a few of the free hosting ones, and settled with yahoo geocities.
Its got some really useful free tools (VERY easy to use...I could!), theres even some templates if you want to have a quick start, and you can upgrade to ad free or have your own domain name at an ok price.
You can make a formal or fun layout, this is my place

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage. Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in "domainname.com", you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... name will be masked by the domainname.com. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE. Here's a demonstration: Type in the URL window: "www.pizzanextdoor.com" which will bring up their pizza website. Take note of the domain name. Then type in the URL window: "http://home.pacbell.net/vten/1a/pizzame... and you will see that this is the original homepage which is unmasked without the domain name!

For a cheap, unlimited website, I use freeola (www.freeola.com and www.getdotted.com).
I have a .co.uk domain, which costs £20 to register every 2 years, and everything else is free. Unlimited webspace, unlimited email accounts at my domain, unlimited access, unlimited bandwidth yada yada.
The only catch with them is you can only access the server from their own internet access (I use their ADSL anyway cos its good) or you can pay a small fee (£5 including email access) to get in via your own broadband connection.
Have a look at the site anyway, all the info is on the 2 sites I mentioned above.
Another thing to consider is that you will need some software to create the files you need. How you get hold of it is up to you, but Frontpage is pretty good, Dreamweaver is my personal favourite though - more than anything because it is very easy to incorporate Flash files into your design.
Learning to use the software will require the most time, but you'll basically learn as you go, or get a for dummies type book. |

My serious advise?, if you building it for personal fun use any free web hosts and self building tools. If its for business I would say don't mess with the DIY sites. It sure is cheap, but would you get any customers with a website thats not appealing and professional?
Think about that for a minute, ;-) |
