Strange replies to my craigslist ad posting... Anyone knows what happens?
I am trying to sell my Sony limited edition laptop on vancouver.craigslist and I got a lot of replies about paying with pay pal and check and stuff. They look very similiar and they are all willing to pay more than $200 for shipping. They don't even ask me about the condition of the item and everything looks so urgent. What they ask for is my PayPal ID and contact info. Do you guys think those are fraud? cuz I think if you are buying a second hand laptop at $1100 you at least should ask me something.

If you want to be paid via paypal, you should check the buyer/seller protection as there has been a lot of fraud (hacked accounts) with paypal in recent weeks.

If they are wanting to send a check, tell them NO and that you want cash (if local) and really verify the funds if you are getting paid any other way.

If someone wants to OVERPAY, this is a sure sign of something fishy and you should be very careful, no matter what they offer.

I suggest you contact them to obtain a phone number to speak to them directly, and if they don't want to talk to you before you mail it, it is another sign of fraud.

You can send a PayPal invoice which has to have your name, but don't ever disclose your password. $200 for shipping seems way out of the ball park--$50 tops would be more in line unless the total price is a bargain.

Yep fraud. If it sounds to good to true, then it's not true.

i would say frauds, but then again they may not be, maybe you should look into these people more before you do anything you'll regret.

yes these are scam artists trying to break into your paypal account.

Report them to abuse@paypal.com

or look on paypal's website for where to report scams

don't respond to their email.

They are urgently trying to get the laptop by using a bad paypal account. This has been happening with a ton of online services where people sell things. They are not intending on paying you a dime, they just want to see if they can get you to mail it before you find out the payment is worthless.
They will be trying to get the tracking number from you before they give you the payment - trying to guarantee the item is being shipped before you can stop it. A friend was shipping some jewelry and fortunately found out the paypal was bad before it had left the post office - many post offices won't go to much trouble to find something that may not have even left the office and using the express shipping is the best way for them to guarantee the odds are best that it will be out of the post office or UPS before you realize you have been had. They really do not care how you ship it - they are not going to pay for the shipping - so faster is better for their con.
