Telemakeing is a new one, never heard of it. What are you making exactly? You definitely have the spelling for a telemarketing job.
First of all, say the persons name correctly. Even if you get it wrong, at least know how you are going to say it before you call. Instead of, "Hello Mr. J.... J... J... JO.... Jons... J..... Jan.... John.....Johnson?", that irritates the hell out of anyone.
Sound confident, and don't talk to someone like you would talk to your idiot friends. Sound confident and professional, and don't rattle off the same thing to everyone so fast that they can not understand you. Sometimes telemarketers call and they are talking so fast (clearly from experience) that I have no clue what they are talking about. |

i too used to work in telesales until i started playing online poker for a living
I was never a fan of the hard sale, I simply advised them what i offered, added in a few jokes to keep the conversation going, left them my number to get back to me, and advised them to look around and compare what i have offered with other companies (as long as you have the best deal that is which we did) and left them to it.
they didnt feel presured, i never made a single sale on the first call!!!!
suppose it depends on how your company views things |

Sell them something they need, if your good at sales your a natural. I do a lot of Tel,Marketing I am born to sell, I own my own business. You have to be a people pleaser too. The customer is always right ..be a good listener. Pushy and persuasive that is the key.JR |

actually its may even be more of a benefit that he cant see you. youre a blank canvas in his eyes. you can make yourself absolutely anybody you want to be. just sound confident. if you dont know the answer then segway into something else with confidence. let him know that youre listening. you have to make him think that youre offering him something thats gonna change his life. he would be at a loss if he got off the phone not you! think of it this way, its just a phone he cant jump through it and yell at you or punch you. you have more freedom over the phone than you do in person.
there are a couple books you should read.
"The new strategic sales"
and "telephone sales in the 90's"
also watch boiler room. that movie will set the tone of who you need to be! |

Don't call dead people, they don't buy anything. I had a fleeting employment with a telemarketing company once. First day on the job, I cold called someone that had died. His wife answered. Needless to say, I did not sell anything to that particular person. Oops. |

Smile while you are talking. If you have trouble remembering to do this, keep a small mirror at your desk and look at while speaking.
Also, don't call me. I will just waste your time for awhile and then hang up. May God bless and keep you. |

Just don't sell anything, just talk to friends until you are fired. You will be doing everyone a favor. |

Act as tho the person is right in front of you when talking to them.... they can 'hear' your facial expressions, posture, etc. in your voice. Do not interrupt them under any circumstances. Answer questions with questions in order to regain control of the conversation and NEVER ask a question that can be answered with "yes" or "no" because those are conversation stoppers. |

Maybe telemarketing is not what you should be doing. If you want to persist: Project confidence on the phone, and speak clearly. Practice your spiel at home, in front of a mirror or with friends (tho they may not remain your friends for long lol).

My guidelines: (They work)
1) Stand up when you pitch. It gives you more energy, and enthusiasm will come through in your pitch. People like that.
2) Don't talk so fast. The faster you talk, the more insecure you sound. It's like you're trying to rush through things before they cut you off...and that must mean you get cut off a lot...I wouldn't want to deal with a guy that can't even get things out without getting cut off.
3) Be as polite as possible. Please and thank you go a long way. Don't be stuffy though.
4) Contrary to popular belief, address people by their first name and SOUND CONVERSATIONAL. You'll be shocked at the difference between "Hello. This is John Smith. May I speak with Mr. Soandso?" and "Hey. It's Jon. Is Randy around?" This is especially instrumental in getting past phone barriers (wifes or husbands, kids taught to hang up on telemarketers, etc)
5) Anything that sounds too good probably is. Knock yourself down a peg or two and then build yourself up again. Say "maybe" and "about" sometimes. Don't always be certain, it makes people wary.
6) Actually be interested in the situations of your clients. Taking the time to find out more about them leads to better relationships; and chances are you can relate to something they're going through or recently went through.
7) Chat - read the news and figure out what people are talking about/interested in. The real salesman always has his game face on. Chat up the guy in line behind you at starbucks - some elements of that same conversation might come up in a cold call.
I could go on and on and on. Back when I was a telemarketer, I realized that you shouldn't be taking an application or making a sale. You should be having a conversation that leads back to a main topic sometimes. By the end of the first conversation, my borrowers know stories about my family, the goings-on in my life, and what kind of person I am...but they also know what their interest rate and payment will be, exactly what I need from them throughout the mortgage process, and how much everything is going to cost them. Because while I'm chatting I'm also punching numbers into a calculator, looking at rate sheets, and taking down information. THAT'S how you telemarket. |

don't call people after 6 pm...most are either sitting down to eat or asleep
best tip would be to get another job, our state does not allow telemarketing calls at all |
