I put a digital camera w/ 2gb of memory up for sale on craigslist and I said I'd ship anywhere. I said I'd sell for $165. I told people to contact me at my email.
Since the listing I have received 4 offers but ALL have been overseas!!! There is nothing wrong with that but they all seem shady. Everyone has the story of "This is for my sister in West Africa, give me your paypal ID and I will pay $200 if you ship to Africa" or "This is for my brother overseas in Europe I will pay $265 for this as a Christmas gift for him."
The people also do not spell very great. I am loving their offers but is there anything they could do once they send payment to scam me or trick me out of the money? It seems so fishy but they are offering good money for the camera.
Can anyone explain what might happen or have you encountered anything similar? Could I get tricked at all?

Paypal is no gurantee. They merely claim the item was never received, get Paypal to do a chargeback... they have your camera and their money (assuming they even use a real credit card)... Tell them you will take Western Union! The scammers use this all the time! |

Scam! I once had a boat for sale for $40 grand and someone from "Africa" sent me a "cashiers check" for $65 grand! The extra 25K was to get the boat shipped to them and I was to send the "shipping company" the 25K and they would pick the boat up. My sister who works at a bank said the cashiers check looked real but to call the bank it was drawn on. I did and it was a stolen check! Be very careful selling to overseas and never take an overage amount and send it to them or anyone else. |

Yes it is a scam...i'll summerize it here, but clark howard's website has better info on these.
The person offers to pay you x amount of dollars, and has you send the item to them. they send you a "cheque". cheque can be certified, a money order..whatever. it appears to be real, so you cash it and ship the item. it takes your bank six weeks to figure out the cheque is counterfit, and guess who is out the cash....YOU.
The bank makes you refund them the money. So..now that you have a counterfeit check, and have already mailed the item overseas..what are you going to do? |

I won't go into all the details of the scam but trust me it is a SCAM/. DO NOT deal with these people.
Basically the will send you a fraudulent check that will pass through the banking sytem but will show up as fraudulant weeks later. And the money will come out of your account.
I don't know how it works with pay pal but it is a scam. |

SCAM!
A Customer of mine at the Bank sold something of similar nature. Ten Business Days later, check came back as Counterfeit it took that long because check was over seas, merchandise was mailed, no contact with them end of story. Oh yes, watch out if it is in Africa, especially in Nigeria, because that's where a majority of them come from. |
