if your starting, stay small and local... dont get swamped by work from miles away...
If youre a sparky, advertise in every post office and cafe' in the area, also put your card up in the big supermarkets.. its free! some even let you leave cards...
seek out the local newsletters... ( i run one) theyll do you a cheap ad, we charge 15 quid a 1/4 page... we also do a "spotlight on" .. to help you... for free...
advertising locally is the cheapest form i know of, everything else costs... web pages are great, but only if local folks know where to look for it...
and then theres the advert design... (which i also do) be creative and keep it simple. and dont advertise your prices... just demonstrate the quality of your work... and, when you get a job, NEVER EVER miss it, or mess anyone around... do a good job and words spreads, do a bad job and word spreads faster. |

Ask yourself, "if I needed an electrician, where would I go to find one?"
The answer will vary depending on where you live and what is available.
For me, in my area, I'd go to the Yellow Pages first - so I make sure I have an ad there.
Then I'd look at boards in local supermarkets and post offices so be sure to have a postcard or business card there too.
PERSONALLY, we get a local magazine but it is just full of adverts so I throw it straight in the bin. Maybe other areas have better magazines!
Leaflets that come through the door just annoy me because I get too much junk mail - about 10 pieces of advertising rubbish every day - so it all goes straight in the bin. But in more remote areas you might not have that problem.
If you live in a small area, I'd suggest going out and meeting people. Just knock on their door and say, "Hello, I'm John and I'm your local electrician. I don't want to keep you but I wanted to let you know I'm always here if you need a sparky." Give them a smile and a high quality business card so they remember you and will keep your card until they need to call you.
Obviously if you live in Chicago, that's a lot less practical than if you live in a tiny village in England. But if you can do it, you'll get know.
If you do live in a big city, you might consider doing it in the local area around where you have just done a job. Go along the street and say, "Hi, I've just been doing some repair work at number 23 along the road. If you need a good electrician, you could ask your neighbour whether she recommends me."
Personal recommendations are the best advertising you will ever get. And remember that it will always cost you three times as much to get a new customer as it will to keep an existing customer - so go for customer satisfaction every time.

there are many ways to design your business, what your business is will depend on what your selling, i'm guessing your just starting out which is great because you'll be able to invest more time and energy into advertising which will in turn reap benefits in the future.
as an electrician there are several ways to start. make up fliers promoting your business offer free electrical check-ups of peoples property and business advertise in the yellow pages and in directories find where there are community notice boards and place ads there start off in your local community and spread outwards slowly.
as a web design company your going to have to compete with some major business and some of the best designers in the world, web design isn't a local business i got my site designed in new zealand and i live in scotland. your site will have to be great show the skills that your able to give to your clients, go to small business seminars and offer your services to people there in return for advertising and promotion with their clients.
the best piece of advice i can give you is invest somemoney in a series of books called gurilla marketing. there are several in the series and they will give you advice on how to advertise any type of business effectivly and cheaply. i spent $100 on the series and it was the best money i ever spent on my advertising |

There's TONS of ways you can advertise your biz whether online or off. Try Pay-Per-Click from Google, MSN, and Yahoo.
