marketing is an art of creating, managing, and expnading your customer satisfaction, old marketers say it telling and selling but today concept is changed and it has been expanded.
needs are physilogical, sociological and mental needs. but wants are needs shaped according to climate and conditions of society. e.g., food=need, but mcdonaldsburger=want.

The answer depends on who you ask.
Marketing helps the consumer understand which products and services best meet their needs.
Marketing helps organizations reach out and find new customers, and build better relationships with existing ones.
Differentiating needs from wants is a pretty small part of it. After all, companies market soda (Pepsi, Coke, RC, etc.) heavily... but it's hard to say that you'd buy one over the other based on a need. Marketers don't care so much about whether you buy because you need, or buy because you want. They only care that you buy.
Marketing is important because it's the tool that allows companies to drive their own destiny. If they just wait for people to find their stuff (i.e., engage in sales without marketing), they'll be reacting to the market, instead of pro-actively positioning themselves in it.
Companies that don't market effectively get stuck competing on price... and there is almost always someone willing to sell for less.
But remember that for all the good that marketers do, it's the folks in sales that make the most money, and have the best parties...

Most people believe marketing is just advertising, but its completely different. Companies used to make products and try to convince people that they need it. Now companies try to understand their market and what their market needs/wants and produce those needs. Marketing is knowing your customer (their needs/wants), your competition (their advantages or weaknesses compared to you) and your own company (opportunites and threats inside your own company). |
