you have to contact website owners that have related sites and ask them to exchange or sell a link to you. |

Quality links are important to boost your page rank from search engines and eventually the traffic. There are numbers of strategies to do link building. The easiest and most effective way is to exchange links. Try to ask for a reciprocal links to the site at your niche(not necessarily the direct competitor) and choose those site with PR 3 and above. That will help you gain respect from search engines.
Another thing is live directory submission. Try to submit your URL-Title-Description to the live directories all over the internet. Please note that this directories were managed by human admins and not robots so be kind and cautious. Submit to the best category for your site. First thing is to submit in dmoz.com. Then for the copy of the rest of the live directories you can refer here...

Look for the same niche with your site, you can leave a comment on that site/blog. But be sure it is do-follow site so that your links their can be counted by SE as backlinks.
Try also forum posting, and submitting your sites to directories.
