SmileyGirl | What's it like to work in the advertising industry? |
I am considering switching industries, but I'm not sure if I would fit into the advertising industry culture. What is it like? It is fun? Stressful? Demanding? |

Get ready to sacrifice your entire life. My step sister and her husband are in advertising. The first 5 years or so were 6-7 day weeks, 14+ hours a day and constant pressure to be productive and innovative. It's highly competitive - between companies which then means within the company. Many late late nights burning the midnight oil before a pitch.
They are now reaping the rewards though. It pays well and obviously it's a steady market. He's often off in different parts of the world shooting campaigns as well.
I work in production and thought I had it rough but some of the stories they told me made even my jaw drop. |

I work in a two-man advertising agency in a town of about 100,000 people (500,000+ in the DMA). I do writing, shooting, editing, graphic design; the other guy does sales. If I didn't love it I couldn't do it. Technology is always changing so there's always more to learn. Coming up with creative new ideas for clients can be a challenge, but for me it's fun. I am free to come and go from work as needed as long as deadlines are met. I love it when client's are blown away with a cool TV ad, Print ad or logo. |

Advertising is all three of those-fun, stressful, and demanding. The fun part is working with creative people: making jokes, being able to create, expressing yourself, you can relax, be yourself. The stressful part is meeting deadlines, dealing with stressful clients with their designs-using MS Word to save their pictures-and most of them don't know what their talking about when it comes to design so it can be a pain. Demanding-you have to worry about statistics, who you're selling to, what to look for when selling to a certain demographic, when to sell, what to sell... It can be stressful and demanding at times, but, overall, it can it's a very exceptional career to have and it's very fun! |

I don't exactly know firsthand but my uncle was in the advertising industry for a long time. He said specifically that it was an industry for young people mainly, the younger people seem to know more about trends etc. He also said that he had to work long hours a lot of the time to finish projects and deadlines. Overall he did say it was really fun.(He was more into the photography ortion of it) |

I'm a copywriter in NYC and have worked at a medium sized agency and a huge one. It goes from being mind-numbingly slow (like now...I haven't had one thing to do all week!) to staying late every night for a big pitch. I think I like the "slow" better. LOL.
It also depends on whether you want to be on the Creative side (writer, art director, designer) or on the Account side (account manager, planner, etc.). This obviously depends on your skills. Agencies are very, VERY relaxed places to work, no one keeps track of your time, and you get to travel to shoots all over the world.
Overall I find it quite interesting and am happy to be in it. One note of caution: advertising is usually a "calling". Most of the people in it have wanted to do it since high school or college. If you're just thinking of trying it out because you're tired of what you're doing now, it might not work out so well. :-) |
