I personally use both options as ways to monetize my website. I would not choose one over the other. The key to making either successful is your content. It is your unique design and the valuable content that will drive people to your site and pre-sell them on what you have to offer. Both are profitable. Set up your site with both and you will see reasults. Anything that has an opportunity to make you money add it to your site and results will show.
Of course make sure you are NOT posting scams.

Well, both can make money. It is best to use both on your websites. For affiliate marketing, I would say you would need either an optin mailing list or may have to use PPC like google adwords. For adsense, if you get lots of traffic, you could make a lot of money.
About a couple of months back the google adsense earning dropped drastically (almost 80 - 90%) for most of the websites owners. It has remained the same. Imagine if a website owner's only source of income is adsense, this would have been major loss. You never know! So, it is best to create multiple sources of income on your website so if one of them goes down, the others sources are still making money. Both can be very profitable. Very often, Adsense will get the click from visitors at your site who won't click on banners, etc.
If all you are doing is hosting your affiliates at your site, then you are missing out on some big profits. Make your affiliates pay more by putting an opt-in form on your site. Offer a free e-book, newsletter, anything. Use those opt-ins to market your affiliates via email on a regular basis. |

Both can be very profitable. If you have a popular product that people are searching for in Google, and you are using the right key words, the key is to learn everything you can about off-page search engine optimization and apply it.
