What's the best way to market an online store?
I sell jewelry supplies and the big guys are always listed first. I've only been in business a short time and I'm wondering if there's a trick to getting customers to come to my store? Can't afford the clickable ads. Tried if for a month, spent over $500 on Google adwords and there was no increase in business.

Promote in person. Give everyone you know and meet a business card with your site address. Worked pretty well for me :)

Also, do some auctions on eBay - people will come to see the other stuff you have available.

In most cases companies will charge a fee to optimize your website for the search engines. This makes your website more appealing to the searches and also gives your better ranking.
I know of another product call SEO Godfather. It does the same thing without the cost of hiring an outside company.
It can be found at http://www.seogodfather.com You can also post free on http://www.monslist.com and if you are looking to do some direct mailing check out http://www.thebulkpro.com

This is the best long term option. You can get a free webstore on there as well by clicking on the Jumping kangaroo. 100% free store with no fees. Once you have a store advertise the url you get just like any other business.

This site has a permanent website listing basis for you:
www.search-the-world.com

By listing your website details on a search index like this it gets spidered throughout the Internet better increasing your overall website search results in the search engines. People find your site better when they enter a search term.

Also this site has PERMANENT website listings so you don't have to update on a regular basis like most other sites. Choose the right category and target your viewers. It always takes some time for the main search engines to update you into their databases. But this is the best way into them. There's around 750 different categories to choose from to target your website listing.

www.search-the-world.com

You normally get listed in a day or two.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 60 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually up to 41 words to form a complete paragraph which
best describes one's goods and services. It is not merely a list.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on
Google.com: Begin with the very "generic" search query
"sandwiches downtown los angeles," taking note to not
abbreviate Los Angeles to "LA" and of course, leave
out the parentheses ("). It will bring up some 2.4
million+ search results. Check out where "Nazos.net"
is ranked. It's on the SECOND FRONT [ranked 15]!
Again, Nazos.net's high web presence was achieved by
proper web design and placement of relevant metatags
according to Google's publication guidelines.

Good luck!

I'm glad that you have realized it's not good economics to try to compete head to head for Google Adwords advertising space, against fortune 500 companies, and businesses that have investors to help cover their expenses.

It's hard to win if you have fight dollar for dollar, against people or companies that have more capital than you!

The best and most economical way to get visitors to your jewelry website is to write keyword optimized, informative articles about jewelry, (especially your niche of the business) and submit them to the many free Internet article directories.

If you've never written an article before, most article directories want at least 400 to 500 word articles or a maximum of 15,000 characters including spaces.

Simply write the way that you talk. Pretend that you're telling a friend or relative all about the jewelry business. Website owners that are looking for content on your subject matter will likely publish your article on their websites.

In most article directories you'll have a section called Author's Bio or about the author, this is the part where you tell a little of your backround and what your website is about, INCLUDING a link to your website.

That is where your potential customers will come from. And as an added bonus, they are highly targeted potential customers because they have already shown an interest in your article.

And you have begun to establish yourself as an authority in your niche market. Here's a link to a list of the articles that I have submitted to goarticles.com http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/author.cgi?C=49708 If you read any of my articles you'll quickly see that I am no author! But look how times my articles have been downloaded. That's free targeted traffic!

From your article submissions you will begin to see an improvement in your traffic probably within 2 weeks. And you don't have to try and pen "War and Peace." Just a brief article about whatever your niche of the jewelry business is.

Do research if you need to. Just try to put it in your own words. You can also answer questions about the jewelry business on blogs that talk about jewelry. At the end of your comments it is usually acceptable to add a link to your website.

Get your Bio out there as much as possible also, and include a link back to your website in your Bio. You'll see my brief bio at the bottom of this page in the source box. Notice the links to my website and blog. I hope these suggestions help.

Well, the big guys probably spend a lot on advertising.
Instead of spending money on google adwords, spend money on a website content writer.
http://www.website-content-writer.com

What's your website address?
I can bet that it's lacking in content.
Also, did you research for keywords?
