I agree; it's very annoying. I love Christmas, but I don't want to celebrate it in October!
I used to work at a bookstore, and we would start receiving Christmas merchandise way before the season. We would stockpile it in the back room until the beginning of November. It's still annoying to have it out before Thanksgiving, in my opinion, but a lot of people like to do their shopping early.
Another bookstore I know of would put the holiday stuff out as soon as they received it (no matter how early that was!), because they couldn't be bothered to stockpile it, and because (in my opinion) they cared less about the sanctity of the seasons and more about creating less work for themselves. They were a larger bookstore, so (also in my opinion) quality was less of an issue.
In slight defense of the companies, the decision to have Christmas merchandise is most likely not being made on the local level. Someone in the corporate center decides what will come when, and how it should be displayed. There's lots of micromanagement, & less freedom & independence nowadays (on the local level) as companies become "standardized" to ensure consistency in larger organizations.
Bottom line: it's still annoying, but what can we do? I won't buy Christmas stuff before Halloween, but I doubt it makes any difference to the companies. |
