What's up with these telemarketers?
I have been receiving a lot of telemarketing calls that are evidently originating from another country. Sometimes you cannot understand what they are saying and you have to ask repeatedly for them to repeat any info. Same goes when you are calling with questions on accounts, etc. with different companies. Wierd.

they are so annoying

Out of all the calls that are made, some will actually produce results. This is what drives telemarketing. Many of the respondents are elderly or lonely and are easily enticed into parting with money.

peach_campbell
I must agree with the irritating nature of the telemarketer. But not all of these calls are from another country, how many differnt cultures are in Canada? Not everybody who immigrates to Canada learns proper english and those who do will probably always have an accent. Besides, telemarketing agencies go through so many employees they will hire just about anyone, because most people who work in this industry quit after only a few months.

oh man telemarketers suck, but take the advice from my sociology teacher, when they ask for you by name answer them by telling them oh no he/she just died. Trust me you will make them feel really akward and maybe they take you out from their stupid list.

Bookworm
A lot of companies are outsourcing to lower costs. Labor is cheaper overseas and it keeps costs down. Unfortunately, a lot of people are losing jobs this way. Do understand that when telemarketers call you, they are not intending to be rude. They are just trying to pay their bills, no matter what country they are in.

Call screening seems to be the way to go these days!! Along with the no-call lists. Sorry if it puts the telemarketers out of jobs, but it gets so........annoying!!

Get an answering machine and screen your calls. Don't answer the telemarketing ones. Or you could just hang up on them instead of listening to their drivel.

Get a Network Marketing distributorship and pitch them back. Most of them are flat broke and prime candidates.

You can put a stop to them calling by signing up for the do not call list registry.

Some call centers are actually located in other countries I don't know of it's cheaper for companies to base there centers internationally or what. I know that it it is extremely irritating to me but I also know it is extremely irritating to the person who takes your call to be asked "what" 1000 times too. When someone calls me who I can't understand i simply say at the start I do not understand what you are saying is there someone else I can speak to? If not I apologize and hang up. Bill collecters on the other hand I tell I don't know where she is but if you find her tell the B*%@# i want my money too.

I agree with Tonya. It's their job and unfortunately the Do-Not-Call Registry doesn't apply to phone number not located in the U.S.

I know! They bug and a lot more companies are having their customer service call centers in places like India. I'm sure it's cheaper for the company or more convenient or something but that's a reason for the accent.

Sydmom
Most likely, they are not foreign countries, just foreigners on the phones. If I call about an account of mine, and can't understand the employee,(usually I am pretty good at understanding, but I know most people aren't) I ask for the manager. If enough people complained about this, they would stop hiring people who can't speak English well, at least for customer service jobs.

I used to be a telemarketer, not by choice but I had to pay my school bill, same goes for alot of people, even those coming from other countries. If you get alot of calls from a company, politely ask to be put on the DO NOT CALL list, but understand that it is not the telemarketers who keep calling you but the company you are listed with. We had no way of knowing who we were calling until a name popped up, and I know that I personally called the same people some times three times a day. Out of decency I put them on the list without them having to ask. So, when you get a "pesky" telemarketer, please remember that they are just trying to make their bills and pay for their children's clothing and it is not them who are making the calls at the annoying time of day, but the companies who they are calling for. (Trust me, they don't want to be calling you anymore than you want them calling, and they would much rather put you on the list than have to go through the same speel for the 800th time! :) )

Telemarketers are all annoying...

FYI: cellphone numbers are being released within days to telemarketers and you will have to pay for the minutes they waste!

To get on the do not call list, call 888-382-1222 (at least in MI if not everywhere) or go to www.donotcall.gov

telemarketers are only doin there job ,,they advertise for other bussiness

bull_rooster_aardvark
Labor is alot cheaper in these other countries than here. Companies save money by having all there customer service and telemarketing done from another country.

For telemarketers, just do what I do. As soon as you are sure it is a telemarketer, say I'm not interested and hang up (typically as I'm hanging up I'll hear the telemarketer saying "but Mr. XXX let me mention...." or something like that).

This may sound a bit rude, but after getting 20 telemarketing calls from the same firm, you become quite rude with these guys. Sometimes they have more computers dialing numbers than people to take calls, so when you answer the phone thre is maybe a 50% chance that the line will be dead because no telemarketer was available at that second to try sell you. Of course you hang up, but they just call you back every so often until you answer the phone and there happens to be somebody there available to try to sell to you. How rude is that.

Once they understand you are a waste of their time they will stop calling. Also, I've never bought anything solicited to me over the phone and I never will. If I want something that badly I'll just go buy it myself (always cheaper than something that is solicited to you and the vendor doesn't have to pay the extra middle man - the telemarketer), and if I find a company that is really aggressive with the telemarketing I will permanently stop buying from them if I can (and endure months of annoying telemarketing as they try to get me back as a customer, but hey in this scenario the telemarketing will stop eventually - compared to continuing to do business with them where you will always have to endure the annoyance).

Mrs. Chatterbox
i dont even talk to telemarketers. i always know its a telemarketer, because when i pick up the phone and say "hello" threres always a 3 to 4 second silent period where i guess their computer system is determining weather or not an answering machine picked up. i take this 3 to 4 seconds to hang up, and not give them a chance to speak with me, as all they usually want is to change my long distance plan, (even though i dont get charged long distance with my current phone plan).

You can contact the public utilities commission to request a block be put on your number. If I remember, I think I did that at my last home by filling out information on line. Also, there is a gadget called a tele-zapper that screens out those type of calls. You can install it directly in your phone line, no tools required.
I've been getting almost daily phone calls from DISH network, and I tried telling them I already have DISH network and as soon as I try to tell them they hang up on me. I'm tempted to change service because it's so annoying. I'd like to stick my foot where their sun don't shine...

tonya
they are just there to get a pay check

robin rmsclvr25
They are obnoxious. As soon as they call I just hang up on them. You can also get your name added to the no-call list that way you won't be bothered with them.
