Depends on your budget, your product, and who is going to buy said product. If you don't have a lot of money you can try your local area. Direct mail postcards are cheap enough to make and send. M13 Graphics out of Schaumburg, IL will give you 2500 postcards for about $169, and then a stamp is .24. You do the math.
You can also hand out flyers.
But if you're looking for more of a "set it and forget it" version try PPC. Pay per click advertising. You have a preset spending limit and you bid on certain keywords related to what you're selling. That way, when people are already online looking for what you have, they can click the ad and buy your stuff.
Google adwords is the best I've found. Depending on what you are doing and how hot the market is you can run an okay campaign on $50-$300/month.
