First of all, Mike M has no idea what he is talking about and guerilla marketing is a joke that no professional marketer takes seriously.
Word of Mouth advertising doesn't happen by accident; it is a carefully cultivated strategy that incorporates an integrated marketing plan.

Before you can begin WOM, you have to have a very clearly defined market, segmentation, and objective. Once you have those, then you can begin looking at how to market to them. As with advertising, you need to make sure your marketing efforts are complimentary to your company and your marekting objective. Then you need to make sure that you create a relevant marketing message that appeals to your target demographic. Once you have those, you can move into WOM.
The 'how to' of is much more technical, but there are some key elements:
1 - you have to have a message.
2 - you need to create a buzz - get people talking about your product (the best way to do this is to provide superior product/service and top-notch customer service - rise above their expectations and followthrough).
3 - you need to convert your consumers to advocates (champions). You do this by accomplishing #1 and #2.
Referral programs and Frequent Buyer's clubs with bonuses are good ways to start. Providing stellar customer service and rewards for your customers are the continuation thereof. |

First things first - for word of mouth to work - you must have a product, service or site people WANT to talk about.
is your audience local, national or international?
the bigger the market the harder 'word of mouth' is.
You need a unique angle... search for gorilla marketing - great concept.. works really well.
Any unique angle will engage some people and dis-engage others...
The age profile of your intended audience will also influence your USP - unique selling point - different things motivate different audiences.
Look at Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! they were world wide by word of mouth - but few marketing people know why...
trial and error and a lot of luck!!
If you offer can gather a cult following then you have it made - but only for so long. Yu-Gi-Oh! have now started advertising conventionally as they 'run out of steam'...

offer a referral rate or gift to clients that send you a certain number of new clients. i gave a new client 5-7 stamped business cards and told them once 3 had been redeemed by new clients, their next service was 25%off, 50% off if they sent in 5 or more new clients. worked great, word of mouth is the best advertisement. |
