whereas a customer is the one who actually purchases the item, and may or may not actually use the product. |

Buyer, is a Customer, where as Consumer is a user.
At times Consumer (i.e., user) is some one other than the Customer (i.e., Buyer). Number of times one customer, what he buys, the same is consumed by number of other persons in the family or a group. More over at times a same person is a customer as well as consumer, too.
Effective Marketing Person will sell his product to customer as well as consumer(s), to successfully market his product, and get repeat orders. |

Broadly speaking a customer is anyone who buys goods or services from you (i.e. a business). whereas consumer is a broad and general term that comprises of all those people who buy the goods and services you provide, but not necessarily from you (they may but them from any other firm/supplier) eg assume you are a manufacturer of tubs: then for you, a retailer who buys tubs from you for resale is your customer but the person who actually buys and uses the tubs (from the retailer eg a housewife) is your consumer...
in modern marketing customers include all those people who deal with your business , this may include vendors, employees, shareholders and also the actual buyers...whereas consumer is one who directly comsumes the product or service offered by you...
so simple diff is customer may or maynot be the end user wheras consumer is the end user of the product/service offered...

In simple language...
Customer is the one who buy product. example- i am buying a chocolate.
Consumer is one who consume or use the products. example- that chocolat was eaten by my brother, so he is the consumer.

In our family my father buy fruits for us. So he the customer and we all in my family are consumer. |

I think a consumer and a customer have some similarity; though I still feel that a consumer is anyone who walks to your business premises and purchases a product (with no affirmation) to ever return; while a customer is a potential client who will need your products time and time again and with whom one can build a business relation with. . |

i dont want to give a text book answer !! I will quote an example.. lets say you go to a restaurant.. you order and eat and leave.. You are a consumer now.. but if you like it and return again to the same restaurant expecting same quality and experience... Then you become a customer !!!
