I entertain customers everyday, I think it's fine you are selling yourself and your product, maybe even your company. It's just a way of doing business... if that's what you meant by entertaining customers.

As a marketing director of a national retail chain, I am always being treated by clients. I am always amazed when I travel out of town how willing some vendors are to "make me happy." Some have offered to take me to strip clubs or go out drinking all night - without even knowing anything about me. They just assume that I'll be down for it.
Other vendors and suppliers are content to simply take me out to dinner or to give me a personal tour of their city.
I'm trying to answer your question; I guess what I am trying to say is that while there are definitely costs associated with entertaining clients and that these costs eventually find their way back into the cost of the product, there can also be a greater cost to the company if the entertainment is deemed inappropriate by a client.
I lose all respect for a vendor who thinks they can secure my favor by taking me out drinking or inviting me to strip clubs. I will tend to view them differently than a competing vendor who picks up the tab at dinner.
I've heard stories of clients being taken out for a night of drinking, getting into trouble and having everything blow up in their face. Think about it, if you are out with a client and the client is making a fool of themselves, getting arrested, or putting themselves in a compromising situation, how is that NOT going to come back to you somehow?

There are none. You are trying to sell something right? Do you believe in the product or service that you sell? If so there is none, many people will buy things from people they like even if the product or service is not the best on the market. So therefore there are no ethical implications. Business can be cut-throat, and sometimes in order to make a sale you have do what you have to. But entertaining clients isn't a bad thing. |

Hi,
I have a lot of experience marketing small companies online (I have 3 companies). One of the best ways is to sign up at business directories and protals. These are basically listings of businesses (simliar to the phone book). The advantage is that these portals usually get a lot of traffic and they're ranked high on Google because of all the quality links they contain.
My favorite portal is called Directory Exclusive. I signed up a few weeks ago because they're giving a away a free business card holder when a person enter's their company info. I received it in the mail 3 days ago =)

It depends on the form that entertainment takes. If it involves golf trips, concert tickets, free food/hotels, then entertaining customers is little different from using bribery to gain market share.
What are the ethical implications of bribery? It increases the hidden costs of doing business, and the free market is less efficient the less transparency there is. If you need a real world example, you can us the recent Boeing vs Lockheed Martin/Airbus scandal regarding fuel tankers for the US Air Force. Or discuss how Nigeria is having difficulty attracting real investment due to the number of internet scammers operating out of the country. |
