What are the most effective ways to motivate my sales team?
I am a sales mgr of an RV dealership and I'm looking for some innovative ways to motivate my team.
Do Not fall in to the standard 'Money Motivation' trap. no matter what you hear money is not the top carrot.
Ask your people what 'carrot' would be a better incentive from them personally.
structure your incentives to the person.
'A' person who loops along consistantly could be based on greatest personal percentage increase. 'B' who brings in most cash could be on greatest cash increase.
'C' could be in number of referrals.
Carrots could be cash, 3day 'quality' get aways, new toys . again make the goals specific and on target to get best results.

On the short term, you could offer a vacation package (like a 3 day getaway to the beach) for the person with the most sales for x period of time. For the long term maybe you could offer some kind of profit sharing based on the individuals sales record? Not sure how much $$ you are willing to invest in this Idea. For me it is a balance between money and time, so money is incentive as well as time away from work.

They should be able to live on what you pay them to show up. If they can't, shame on you.
Incentivize sales performance with more money.
Disincentivize failure to perform by firing the nonproductive.
Any suggestion by a member of management that "earning a paycheck, the bigger the better" is NOT the primary objective in obtaining employment should be dismissed as the Motivational Seminar Drivel that it is.

The movie "Glengarry Glen Ross" had some great motivational tools. It's been a while since I saw the movie but I do remember the sales tactics could inspire any salesperson.

Unfortunately, the sales world largely stinks, as it involves "motivation" and pressure tactics that are abnormal.
I think simply having a motivational commission structure, teaching people to be honest and forthright, as well as teaching the proper "boxing in" techniques for closing should do it.
