I follow the person that said focus, focus, focus. The first steps in making your company well known is establishing your brand ((people buy you first)), integrate that brand into your service offerings and then build all of your marketing efforts around your created brands.
Remember a brand is more than a nice logo and a world-class brand is developed over-time. The important thing is to start from where you are a build it and launch now.

Focus, focus, focus. You don't care how well-known your software company is - you just want to make sure it's well-known to the people you care about. If you're selling software for artists, don't worry about reaching engineers.
Check Yahoo! Groups, Google Groups, etc. for groups of prospective customers, and promote your company (in a polite and respectable way, of course) there.
Do something to attract the attention of the people you want to reach, and get them talking about your company and its products.
Be compelling, and get as close to your customers as you can. |

Avertise on different sites (as many as possible). Some sites have a price per month for a spot on their site. Search around the internet.
Put out a commercial. Find a cheap package and theres instant LOCAL avertising.
Rent board signs for a few years in different cities.
Show your product to other componies. Who knows, you might make a couple partners. |

While writing software only for Windows, you may overlook an equally profitable market in the Apple OS X marketplace. Two major game companies began to support OS X again now that they run on Intel processors.
And figure out what you can do better than any other application on the market. Today's best seller can be tomorrow's forgotten application if something better comes along.
Don't try to go after common software like word processors and spreadsheets. Find some application that will set the imagination on fire and give the user tools to make their vision come true. |
