What colours make people buy?
Are there any particular colours or colour schemes that incite people to part with their cash?

Yes, it is a well-known fact that restaurants (particularly fast-food outlets) use the colours red or orange and yellow as it is well known that those colours tend to evoke feelings of hunger in people and being in the red family, it also creates a fast environment as the colour is one of the first colours people notice and can see them from far away. Think also of Coca-Cola packaging, McDonalds and Wimpy restaurants. Much food packaging uses the same colour schemes. It depends what products you are selling, but colour is a very useful tool in retail as if you can tap into what products the consumer is buying and the sort of atmosphere they would prefer to purchase them in and then cater the atmosphere and environment to encourage them to either spend more time there and browse or alternatively to get them into the store and out as soon as possible. (therefore creating more turnover for you). It really does depend on your product type.
It is very rare for retailers to change their colours as they tend to need to stick to a brand image, but if you are selling a range of brands, it probably best to stick to a more neutral colour scheme as the colours of the products will jump out at the customer. As Donna W mentioned earlier, The Colour Institute predicts and develops ranges of colours which are considered modern for all kinds of things, be it fashion, decoration, home textiles, product design etc about 2-3 years before things come into the mainstream. You should be able to find information on their website quite easily.

Fresh and clean colours - blue, green, red, orange, purple - but it depends on the product too - look at the sensation that Apple created when they put colour on the first iMacs - people went crazy!

This is hard to say because every person has different taste, therefore each person would choose differently.

But I see that any product that has variety of colours often gets more attention, especially in gifts, toys and hardwares.

I think supermarkets like to use yellow to highlight their special offers.

pinkluxe
Well it has been shown, depending on what type of company you are advertising, that colours do infact trigger different emotions in our brains.

Red and yellow are best used with marketing food. Blue is definitely a safe choice for any starting business, as it has a calming, safe effect. See the link below for descriptions on how different colours trigger different emotions to the consumer.

Colors make a huge difference in marketing. The above link explains what role colors play.

Good question!

Kenzie072
Yes, market research says pastels and bright. You will never see blue ( or should not in a dining room ) as it is calming and hence attributed to sleep. red is also a power colour. More people should get a clue when it comes to ladies dressing rooms. Lighting is also key.

depends on what you are selling. I saw a thing on TV once about this group of people who select colors for a season...
ever notice how last years black pants look different than this years black sweater? People get paid to make those decisions. Those colors filter through the market in clothes, fabrics, paints, paper, ads, etc... I can't remember who makes the decisions but I'm sure you can find it online...

Alos - certain colors do invoke moods - so pick appropriate colors to mood - Red - Action, blue - calm, etc.

purple, blue, green
purple is associated with royalty, blue has come to symbolize serenity and infinity, green is associated with the new growth of spring, prosperity, and clean, fresh air.

XenonAudio
Usually warm and vibrant colors. Consider the logos of companies that set the benchmark in their industry.

Colours change with fashions but presentation sells

Granny
Soft colours like lilac, blue cream, pink, turquoise

xhalfangelicx
The color doesn't matter that much, it's usually brightness or something irregular that catches my eye. Dull-colored things often go unnoticed, so if ur trying to sell something make it stand out.

LuluBelle
Nope, it has to be a good product.

WFH
Nope. The price is more important.
