What do we really buy when we make a purchase? A product or what(we hope) it can do for us?

A product is a means to an end.
People have needs and wants

Needs
We don't need a car, we need transportation
We don't need a house, we need shelter and heat.
We don't need shoes, we need to protect our feet.

Wants
We don't want an ipod, we want portable music.
We don't want a new book, we want knowledge & entertainment.
We don't want treadmill, we want love or health.

Nobody buys products they buy solutions to wants and needs.

Marketing teaches you that a product has features, but those features must be real benefits to the customer for them to have any value. Features for features sake just doesn't sell.

So, in answer to your question, we buy benefits, not features or the products or services those features are attached to.

Interesting Question
Buying anything is emotional above all else and does not really follow a predictible pattern.
Who has ever purchased a tie they did not like...no one.
There is always an emotional attached to each purchase made.
The purchase is based on "Having" and "Not Having", which is seen as Value.
Take a Diamond for instance, it did not climb out from all the rocks and claim that they were worth $1000's. We put the value on it.
Consumers have a Decision making process they go thourgh.
First it is the AWARENESS of, INTEREST in, DESIRE to and ACTION that follows through on the purchase...all emotional.

When we purchase, we are purchasing a product that has a purpose for us. When you buy a card, you are purchasing words that tells how you feel for another person. When you buy a car, it is what is pleasing as well as affordable to you. No one ever buys a product just for the product. Buying a product to feed the purpose and desire.

Some product’s pricing is based upon its emotional value and some other's based on its feature and quality. For products that have a status or an emotional value included, the price is based upon that (for example Ferrari products such as hats, shoes, etc. cost many times their manufacturing costs). Other product’s prices (e.g. commodity products) are based on its direct and indirect costs. In every case marketing & promotion costs are included in a product’s price. Sometimes these costs have a great impact in the product’s pricing.

Another important factor is the type of the product: If the product is consumable (e.g. food, drinks, etc.) the pricing is based more on its costs while if the product is not consumable (such as a car or housing appliances) the cost may be based on emotional value, status and/or the core need or will that it satisfies.
