If you subscribe to the view that marketing is simply a means of exposing your point of view to your target audience (or the masses) then religion has just as much right to do so as anyone / anthing else. Of course, religion has been marketed for a long time in ways other than just commercials. Other examples:
Billboards: Tons of these. I love the ones that imply that Jesus will be returning to earth shortly (ever notice how old and weathered they look?)
Lobbying: It pays to support your most ardent constituents
Advocacy Groups: Many groups out there with solid funding that do PR work - you can identify them by looking for the word "Family"
PR: too many examples to cite - it's tough to get your story out through a historically liberal outlet like the media or Hollywood - but a few conservatives have helped (Like Mel Gibson for instance.)
Radio: True grass roots stuff - mostly for local churches and events.
Image Updates: We've seen the growth of the mass-marketed mega-churches that have updated themselves to appeal to those who don't go in for hymns and stained glass. Traditional churches call them "Disney" churches and deride the dumbing down of the religious message. I call them entry point marketing. |

I don't have a problem with them. They're just trying to attract as many people their way with the various media we have. TV probably works great. By the way, I'm an atheist and it doesn't make any difference to me. I am always for fairness. So it works both ways. If atheists want to attract people by TV then that's OK with me also. If other religions or cults want to use TV, then that's OK too. It's ALL or NOTHING. |

I am all for anything that promotes Jesus but unsure about this possibility because of freedom for all organized groups, and I don't know if it would be appropriate for my young impressionable children to see cult-type groups advertising. |
