If you read the back of packs with this on normally you can send your details to the company at their competition department and they will say for example open a packet of crisps on your behalf and see if you have won. personally i'd rather buy a bag of crisps and have them myself than waste a stamp!

Normally the product will have the address on to write to for free entry into a competition or whatever the offer is. I agree its difficult to see this without buying it but it would in theory give you another chance to win.

companies have to do this to get round gambling laws. if you had to purchase a product to enter a competition this could be seen as a 'stake' and then gambling laws would come into force and the company would be obliged to ensure entrants are over 18 and have a gaming licence
