In the business to business area, or the business to consumer area?
In either case, it's in opposition to the transactional approach--looking at each transaction individually, rather than at relationships that may occur over time.
Any basic marketing textbook will provide you with definitions.
Edit: Relationship marketing generally assumes that they are long-term in nature. They can be between two businesses (B-to-B, such as Wal-Mart and Kraft) or between the business and the consumer (B-to-C). |

Relationship marketing, also referred to as one-to-one marketing, means targeting prospects most likely to buy your products and services and then building relationships with those customers to maximize their lifetime value. This is referred to as database marketing, or behavioral targeting.There are many benefits to relationship marketing including that it is much less expensive to market to current customers than to gain new ones.
Relationship marketing often includes personalized marketing (customizing text, offers, and images for each customer.) PURLs are also ideal for relationship marketing. |

Relationship marketing can also be defined as creating a relationship, know, like and trust, with your client BEFORE pitching them on your deal.. One of my mentors, Tom "Big Al" Scrhieter has some very good literature on his site about this and other marketing techniques... You can find him at Fortunenow.com
Zig Ziglar also teaches this concept and has some very good free podcasts.
I am sure there are other good marketing coaches out there, but these two are some of my favorites, VERY well known as authorities world wide in the field.
