What does the + sign represent in a phone number?

i have to apply some standards to a company hotline list. Does the "+" sign in front of a country code mean anything? Is it required? How do I know when it's needed?

And do I put it before or after the country code? I've seen it both ways and can't find the answer in style manual. example, to call Hong Kong, country code 852, is it +852-### or 852+ ###? thank you!

The plus sign is short code for international calling prefix for the country you are calling *from* (that is, the number you dial *before* the country code to indicate that you are dialing an international number.)

This site has a nice list of country codes and international dialing direct prefixes:

As you can see, the "+" stands for "00" in most countries. The US uses "011." The same site has some nice directions on dialing that may be of use to you:

When you dial the number,you dial 00 instead of + sign.and then the country code.Its a short version for 00.

It is the code you have to dial to make out of country calls before you dial the country code...like for someone calling India from USA they would dial 011-91 and to call UK 011-44
the 011 part is the " + "
you will have to use the code 011 to call outside USA except to maybe Canada

+ plus sign means to add like 1+ 304+the phone number

did you know if ya dial 10 10 297 + 1 + area code + the phone number.....it only costs 4 cents a minute!!!!!

Not required, like the dashes in a number, but a good at-a-glance indicator of an international number. I'd use it.

I think it means that it's an international call. I believe it shows up when an international call is coming in. I don't think it's needed when making an outgoing call.
