cold calling is a term used in sales.
I will use mortgages or insurance for example. You have a list of names. You call them and say hi im Mary. I can finance your home. They say I dont have a home. Cold calling means you are basically picking up a phone book and calling people that might not even want or need what you are offering.
Hot leads or hot calls, is where you are calling somebody back that actually has interest. You would be the second or third call normally on this. Or somebody that put on your website that they want you to call them.
Now if you are doing Cold Calls. Be very careful to scrub the names. Ie scrub them to see if they are on the do no call list. If a company asks you to cold call and the names arent scrubbed dont do it. The fine is 10,000 dollars, and it can be attached personally. You boss can say call these 10 people, the company can get a 1 million dollar fine, and it attachs to you.
Mortgage companies and Real Estate Agents make up 95% of all fines for doing it.
Now if you live in Utah. Real Estate Agents, Mortgage Officers, and people that have a security agent are exempt. But only if you are calling in the state.
Check your state law very carefully. And never call accross state lines (thats where the feds are involved). Once you are done checking your state law. Check it again. Then again. You do not want to get hit with the fines that come with it. |

Cold-Calling is telemarketing, where numbers are given to you and you call and try to sell whatever it is you are selling. These people are not expecting the calls, and aren't usually receptive to them. It is much harder to make a cold call sale, than a warm call sale.
This differs from warm-calling in that with warm-calling, these are typically people who have expressed interest in your goods or services via online inquiries or previous purchases from your company. |

making a phone call to a person or business, usually to try and sell something. i.e. "taking a chance"
Wiki description:
In personal selling, cold calling is the process of approaching prospective clients, typically via telephone, who have not agreed to such an interaction. The word "cold" is used because the person receiving the call is not expecting the call or has not specifically asked to be contacted by the sales person. It is often very frustrating and difficult for those making cold calls because they are often rebuffed, hung-up on and rejected by those receiving the calls. It could be said that it is equally frustrating for the person receiving the cold call, since they expected something they care about, and instead get a marketing pitch.
Cold-calling is used in many venues outside sales. The term applies to any situation where one person calls another person or organization without a prior relationship. Headhunting firms, for instance, are notorious for this practice.
Some sales people have come to the conclusion that cold calling is ineffective, inefficient and a waste of their time. Others have tried to develop techniques to lower the rate of rejection. These approaches are based on the idea that the purpose of the call is not to make a sale, but to build trust and discover the truth about whether there is a good match between the potential client and product or services offered.
There are a number of ways in which cold calls can be effective. One is for the selling organization to start with a high quality, up-to-date database consisting of qualified prospects that have an interest in the product being sold. Another is to use cold calls as a "step in the door". Rather than using the call to try to close a sale, it is used as the initial contact in a long-term relationship. This has the effect of removing the sales pressure from calls and making the goal of the call to build trust. Cold calls can also be used to obtain quality sales leads, references, and testimonials.
Cold calls can also be done in person rather than over the phone, but this is less common because of the high cost of face-to-face sales calls. This can be done anywhere two people meet, including public buildings, businesses, or even residences. It is much harder to turn down someone to their face, so some organizations continue to use it. A number of advocacy group such as PIRGs and Greenpeace use this to spread information and sell memberships at the same time. Pyramid schemes also often use this, but then the cost is borne by lower members in the pyramid while the majority of the profits go to the leaders of the scheme. |

Cold calling is calling people when you don't have an appointment - you just pick names based on where they live etc. and call them out of the blue hoping to get your foot in the door and either make an appointment to come oput to the house to sell them insurance or something or sell them something over the phone. |

....is when you call a "potential" customer for goods and/or services that you offer. This would be out side of your network or other customers that you usually call. Some companies require you to do so many per day, week, or month. |

it is going through a phone book or a list of names and numbers that a your perspective employer will provide , calling them and trying to sell them something, sign up for something, or get them to come in for a meeting.
If they want you to work on commision only, pass. If they offer you a training salary you should just try it and see how long you can last. Good luck! |

Cold calling is when you attempt to call and sell something to someone with whom you've had no prior contact. In other words, they haven't expressed interest in what you're selling prior to the call. |

Cold calling is when the person calling does not personally know the person they are trying to reach. For example, you know those people that call you during dinner hour to try and sell you insurance or whatever? Well, the guy/girl calling you is doing what's called a cold call - they don't personally know you, they're just calling you to try and make a sale. It's a really krappy way of trying to sell your product. |
