What, in your opinion, is the best form of advertising and why?

First, I think you need to ask yourself what your mission is. Example, are you trying to promote your services to get immediate sales results or are you trying to get your name out there? If you are trying to obtain immediate cash flow, then advertising in the newspaper or on tv is a good idea. You can probably purchase air time (radio) as well- but be wise on when to purchase these particular advertisements. You can buy air time on the radio pretty reasonable during the afternoon hours, but the consumers you are trying to reach won't be listening...they'll be working. Radio time will be best purchased between 6-9 am or 5-7 pm. Newspaper advertising would be best purchased on the weekends (sundays) since that is the day of the week when most readers actually take time to read the paper. I'm not too familiar with television advertising, but I'm guessing that you could probably contact your local station and advertise there during peak times (5-8 pm or 6-9 am.) I'm also guessing that tv advertising is pretty expensive.
Now, if you are trying to get your name out there and "brand" yourself, then magazine advertising would be appropriate. Magazine advertising is an investment, but if you choose the publication wisely, over time readers of a respectable magazine remember your ad and automatically trust you and your services because you are in a respected magazine. Magazines are also an investment to its readers, so magazines tend to keep a shelf life of 6 months- which in numbers means that your ad will be read approx. 3 times- and that's by one person. Magazines are usually passed down to someone else because of the 'initial cost' of it. If one issue has passed through the hands of three people and those three people read thru the magazine 3 different times, your ad has just been 'branded' 9 times...now multiply that by the magazine's distribution and how many times a year it's printed! Find a highly respected local or statewide magazine and give them a call...

Without any doubt, word of mouth (personal testimony and referrals) is the best form of advertising.

Nothing else even comes close.

If you are looking for a particular product, and your best friend says, "I've shopped around, and this is the BEST" then what are you going to do?

You will buy what your friend recommended.

Now, getting to the point at which millions of consumers recommend your product to their friends is a totally different kind of advertising discussion.

But you didn't ask that question.

There is no "Best" advertising vehicle per se....You will get the best results from using many forms. You want your prospects to recieve "multiple touches" of your advertising message. Your advertsing should compliment each other. The closest thing to an "all encompasing perfect advertising medium" would be Direct Mail, hands down.

Advertising that you try to do "Cheap" or by yourself ( and your not a professional at it) is a blithering waste of money. In my opinion, there is no exception to that rule.

I guess it would depend on what type of business. But for an online business, the best for of advertising is definitely a pay per click campaign through one of the search engines. The ads can be as targeted or as general as you like, and you only pay for actual visitors coming to your site. If noone clicks on your ad, you don't pay anything, yet you still benefit from the possible impression your ad made on the user...

The most effective form is Search Engine Optimization. This is because people on search engines searching for your product are generally ready to buy.
