M W stole my thunder. 'Advertising ethics' is an oxymoron. In the advertising world, whatever ad moves the most merchandise is the best. That is the ONLY criterion for advertising, for for business in general.
But there might be some advertiser's organization that has an approved list of ethical rules for its members. Don't advertise alcohol and tobacco to children, for instance. If you Google 'advertising ethics' you might find something like this. (I didn't, but I didn't look very hard.)
Congress and state legislatures are constantly considering laws to ban ads people find offensive. In California, for instance, you can't put up a billboard for cigarettes within a certain distance of a school. It used to be illegal to advertise distilled alcoholic beverages on TV (but beer and wine have always been okay). We banned cigarettes on TV long ago but cigars were still allowed! It used to be considered unethical to advertise condoms on TV, but I don't think it was ever illegal.
But everyone, especially advertisers, know that advertisers will take advantage of any way to communicate with a new market. So new laws will always be necessary, as circumstances change. |

Ethics is doing what is right, even if there are no laws in place to do the right thing. When you do what is right even if it is a loss to your own well being or profit to your company then you have done the ethical thing.
Sexual advertisements, that is using sex to sell products has been controversial for a number of years. There have been many complaints about it but so far few restrictions are in place.

as its been said.. an oxymoron.
a guy told me once that the stuff they teach in advertising school was disturbing. a lot of psychological stuff. they basically brainwash people to buy their product.
it should have boundaries.. but doesn't. showing bras and skivvies.. it has desensitized us. there is no modesty any more. |
