From a consumer point of view, I would have to say that Pepsi's current strategy is pretty transparent. Even though I probably watch 6-7 hours of television every day, I cannot even tell you Pepsi's current tagline.
In my opinion, Pespi has not had a clearly defined strategy - or at least a clear execution of their strategy since the Pepsi Challenge days. Then, their message was clear: compare the taste of Coke to the taste of Pepsi and see which you prefer. Pepsi came out way ahead on that one - even to the point of "forcing" Coke to re-do their formula. (Which back-fired on them, by the way.)
Before that, Pepsi had "The Choice of a New Generation," which was a brilliant way of saying "today's younger audience drinks Pepsi, because Coke is old fashioned and the stuff their grandparents grew up on."
Nowadays, it seems as though both Coke and Pepsi are trying to outdo one another by seeing who can hire the biggest or the hottest new celebrity. That stuff just doesn't connect with me.
So - answer to your question: I have no idea what Pepsi's strategy is, so given that, I'd say it is NOT working. |

Pepsi is selling a worry free lifestyle. You don't see many families or old people in Pepsi commercials and you hardly ever see people "working". Pepsi is about "me" and having fun. Nobody is sweating or running late and Pepsi drinkers don't need to be "refreshed" like some soda ads. Pepsi targets the young, active and worry free lifestyle.
But they also sell active drinks: Gatorade. Still, no older people, no families and no children. With Gatorade, the only struggles in your life are the ones you choose. |

They will always be close competitors but they will also always have a solid strategy. Pepsi's CEO, Indra Nooyi is doing a lot to tak ethe company in a new direction of being more environmentally and socially responsible, which I think is really great. |
